Children Need to be Restricted from Technology

Children need to be bored in order to grow and become creative thinkers. Over use of technology decreases that growth. When a child is bored they start to think, explore, learn, and problem solve. The issue with the over use of technology is that children are not getting enough of a chance to be bored, thus creating a generation of children that expect things to happen immediately, who don’t know how to explore, that are less creative, and not competent problem solvers.
To understand why being bored is a good thing we must first know what it means to be bored. Family psychologist Micheal Ungar Ph. D states: “boredom is a temporary state, it is a lack of stimulation and the unpleasant feelings that come along with it.” When children are bored they have a desire to fill that void of stimulation. This is a good desire. The problem lies in what fills that void, or rather what continually fills that void. If that void is constantly being filled with technology like a smart phone or tablet the child is missing out on opportunities to discover what interests them and earn problem solving skills. While this is correct, the problem lies in the over use of this form of entertainment. Only allowing a child to occasionally use technology to cure bored is ok, however when a child always turns to technology to solve the issue of boredom problems arise. Author Infancia Cardozo published an article in 2015 where she brought up the statement that “The smarter the toy, the less challenged the child.” Cardozo goes on to say that “Tech overuse, in particular, smartphone and tablet overuse, among toddlers according to many researchers may stunt social-emotional and language development and problem-solving
