How many children have their own top-secret laboratory at the age of eight? Deep in the cellar of our family home were stored a great variety of discarded machines and components, random materials, and my father’s collection of tools. I took advantage of this neglected and forgotten underground space to create a fully functional laboratory and workshop where I was free to imagine and perform scientific experiments. I created my own curriculum of scientific study, I learned at my own pace and in my own way.
My workshop was huge, encompassing the entire footprint of the largest house in the neighborhood. A generic wooden staircase descended into the middle of the room, splitting the floor plan into four main sections. The left side of the wall facing the base of the stairs was lined with the hot water tank and furnace that warmed the water for our house. Mysterious noises would emanate from this area of the basement. Sometimes my brothers would cruelly turn off the switch at the top of the stairs and the only light in the room would be the flickering blue glow of the furnace reflecting on the shiny concrete floor.
Turning right to face the front of the house, one long windowless wall was lined floor to ceiling with steel shelves. These muscle rack units were stacked with junk and treasures packed into boxes and old luggage. There did not seem to be any order to what was in each container. It was up to me and my brothers to find out. The lower shelves were filled with boxes of our old toys and broken sports equipment. This discarded bric-a-brac became raw materials for make believe and fantasy. The upper shelves seemed to contain older items, foreign detritus from our parent’s childhoods. Reaching these archaic items was dange...

I lost interest in those batteries once I discovered the power of alternating current. In fact my favorite toy growing up was an old electrical power cord that had been pulled out of a lamp. I don’t remember where I found it. Maybe in one of those boxes on the shelves, or more likely, I cut it off a lamp myself. I used to run tests where I’d send 120 volts of alternating current through various materials, and observe the results. My favorite objects to observe were metal bolts; they would get white hot. I could pick them up with pliers and burn hexagonal holes in paper or plastic. Now that I know a bit more about electricity, I realize my experiments could have caused some serious accidents. But I learned more about the principles of nature by getting electrocuted through that damn lamp cord, than I ever could have in a classroom.
Electricity is an interesting subject. There is so much you can learn from it, like how our lights turn on or how we make cell phones. This is all a mystery until we finally get a little bit of information in our brains. I've just read two articles, "Energy Story" and "Conducting solutions". I also watched a video called Hands-on Science with Squishy circuits. I learned so much valuable information from these resources.

... Homer’s Odyssey. It is not only used as an allusion to portray the values of ancient Greece, but also plays a role in recognizing that despite there may not be many differences in today’s life, there is truly no discrepancies in the human experience, in the feeling of emotion. Specifically the strong emotion intertwined and frankly powering the relationship of father and son. Through their distance, Odysseus and Telemachus grow profound respect for each other and really become to honor each other. Once that distance is no longer, and the longing and hope of seeing each other is present, they are gifted with the power to fill that void, and to become personally acquainted. This is truly a gift, truly a gift they have, the ability to feel the significance of the relationship of father and son, which is no different than what is, on a delved level experienced today.
While sliding my feet into my black leather dress shoes, my fingers grasp the mauve tie sitting on my unmade single bed. The noise from the washing machine bounces off the wooden acoustics, echoing throughout my small apartment. I walk to the bed and sit down on the edge, making a dip on the surface. My eyes dart to the wooden nightstand drawer, I yank on it for a while and it finally comes out. The collection inside the drawer includes multivitamin tablets, some Panadol, two medical directory magazines, a medicine prescription paper pad, a few bandages and several coins. However beneath the layer of my collectables there is a sheet of pitch black felt which separates my collectables from my treasures. I grab each corner of the felt and shift the pile to the
"The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman revolves around a woman’s struggle within a patriarchal society. The story is taking place in the 1920s, where men considered themselves to be superior to women because of the role they played in the society; protector and provider of women. This male dominance led the narrator from “The Yellow Wallpaper” into loneliness and eventually to a place of no return. The alienation is shown in terms of the setting, "The most beautiful place! It is quite alone, standing well back from the road, quite three miles from the village." The house that the couple rent for three months represents the woman’s physical imprisonment and symbolizes her isolation. Moreover, the nursery that John recommends his wife to live in includes many confining elements. The bars on windows, bedstead nailed down, and a gate at the top of the stairs suggest an unsafe place. The narrator’s preference of living in the downstairs room is undermined by John’s control over her. Furthermore, John puts his wife into an environment with no communication, making her socially isolated. The protagonist is home alone most of the time while John is at work. She is not allowed to raise her own baby, and Jennie, John's sister, is occupied with her job. This causes loneliness and leaves the protagonist overwhelmed of her mental state. Since she has been advised the rest cure, she spends the m...
Being the owner of LSU, Joe probably operates as a sole proprietor. It is recommended that the business change its entity selection to limited liability company (LLC). The main advantages to an LLC are the protection the LLC owners receive from business creditors, and the fact that the owners can still participate in the management of the business.
Throughout the Odyssey, there are many relationships that represent love between two people. These relationships show loyalty, compassion, and the wanting to be near one another. Two of these kinds of relationships are between Odysseus and Telemakhos, and Odysseus and Penelope.
My friend’s house is wicked old. Built in the 1700s, there’s a lot of really old stuff there. It may have been involved in the Underground Railroad. It has secret passageways and windows for servants to look in and talk to their masters. They originally lived in Springfield, Mass. and he [his friend’s Dad] knew the two people in the house in Agawam, Massachusetts previously. When he found out it was going on the market he decided to go buy it. Before they managed to complete the sale one of the two ladies died. And the other lady either died or left. At least one of them died in a room in the house. So after that they still decided to take the house. There were a few times when he tried to find things. And one time in particular he was looking for a ladder. He looked everywhere around the house including inside, outside, and in the shed. That night he had a dream and the dead previous owner came to him in the dream and told him to look in the shed again. The next day when he looked in the shed, the ladder was sitting right directly in the middle of it just like she had said in his dream. There was no way he could have missed it the day before. This happened on a couple different occasions with other items as well.
The Odyssey also illustrates other relationships where love is of great importance – one of the most emphasized is the father-son relationship between Odysseus and Telemachos. This relationship is a little awkward because they both never really got to know each other but they still care for each other's well being. When Odysseus hears of all the suitors devouring Telemachos's future fortune and mistreating him, he wants to return and revenge the misuse of his family and property. Odysseus, like any parent, also misses his only child while he is at war. Telemachos on the contrary also displays a lot of love for his father. Telemachos leaves Ithaca, nexperienced, to find any knowledge of his father in hope that he is still alive. Telemachos through out most of his life has lacked a father figure and desperately needs that special help and guidance from Odysseus as he becomes a man. Their relationship seems to show how love can give you the strength to carry on.
chocolate, under the circumstances of a natural world. Such an experience does not only contribute to their better understanding of different processes happening around them but also teaches children to employ and rely on their senses. As a result, students receive an opportunity to investigate properties of chocolate and predict its reaction under different circumstances. Moreover, this experiment encourages children to employ evidence for creation of various testable predictions of other objects and natural phenomena. Elementary science, in its turn, will enhance students’ skill of analytical and critical thinking that allows either to support or refute different claims and
Throughout the story The Odyssey there are many themes that represent major parts of the story. The main theme that stood out to me is love which includes loyalty. “Love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person; a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, as for a parent, child, or friend; or a sexual passion or desire” (dictionary.com). “Loyalty is defined in the Webster's dictionary as faithfulness or devotion to a person, a cause or a duty” (Webster’s dictionary). Through these definitions, it can be expressed that loyalty and love are major themes in Homer's epic, "The Odyssey". Love and loyalty shows relationships that are between two people. The few relationships that represents love and loyalty is between husband and wife Odysseus and Penelope and also between father and son Odysseus and Telemachus. These relationships shows more than just love and loyalty though, their relationships also shows compassion, sympathy and the need to be in each one another’s lives.

Standing a mere three feet tall at most, it guards the door of my bedroom as a silent sentry. Its dual levels have been incessantly reordered to house each item in an aesthetic and efficient manner. The faded brown of the wood highlights the array of bright covers that lay at the front, patiently waiting to be withdrawn and analyzed once more. This humble bookcase is the crowning jewel of my personal space. The walls are lined with a diverse selection of truly enthralling books, all penned by arguably the most astute minds of all time. The knowledge of centuries lies at my finger tips, breathlessly hungering for me to turn the pages and absorb its riches.
