Throughout Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Hamlet’s sanity is questioned numerous times. Some side with the idea that he was completely sane but others believe that he was a truly mad prince. Shakespeare uses his phenomenal writing ability to cause the reader to question their true feelings towards Hamlet. Hamlet is no more than a boy trying to avenge his father, but gets too caught up in the idea of revenge to have the ability to logically think about his actions.; however, his growth as a character throughout the play is a very important piece of the plot of the play. When we first meet Hamlet in Act I Scene II, he is no doubt suicidal. His first line is an aside to himself that says “ A little more than kin and less than kind” (Shakespeare 36). Here, Hamlet is referring to Claudius as “more than kin” because he is both
He uses his wise witty words to confuse others and get them to say things that they might not mean, he uses his ability to put words in others mouths they don’t want to say. Hamlet developed overtime from being suicidal to being blood thirsty with revenge. Is any type of writing, whether it be a play, movie or book, fully developed if there is not character development? Hamlets development over the course of the play was crucial to the plot, even though the plot was inconsistent at times. If he hadn’t moved from being suicidal there wouldn’t have been a story because he could’ve just ended his life before he knew about the truth behind his fathers murder. Hamlet’s character was no doubt complex but he was very relatable to audience members; he wasn’t overdeveloped nor underdeveloped creating a character that was easy to follow. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is no doubt a beautifully written piece that will forever be written about throughout English literature and Hamlet’s development creates a story that will be spoken about for years to
