The narration of Sonny’s Blue is by an unnamed person (James 122). Judging by the tone used by the narrator, it is easy to tell how angry he is particularly on Sonny’s drug addiction. The author, James Baldwin, has incorporated many literary elements into his work. The interpretation of the literary elements used in the story is helpful to an individual in understanding the story better. The narrator, a teacher in a Harlem, starts by saying how proud he is for creating a good life for himself despite the many challenges that have come his way. The various character changes in the story are somehow subtle and interesting, as they change the whole plot of the story. For instance, there is a character change in Sonny. At some point, he is battling with heroin addiction whereas there are incidents that he has recovered from the addiction. Following the characterization change in the story, it is easy to develop questions related to why the author comes up with the story (James 151). Some of the questions that I find appropriate to the story is the effects that drug taking have on an individual and the reasons why people become drug addicts. Another likely question that an individual can have after reading the story is how a person’s family gets affected by having a relative with drug addiction. In the opening scene, the narrator is able to read the newspaper with the story of his brother’s arrest through the swinging subway lights. In the story, the narrator also speaks about the darkness that is on the outside of the subway(James, 122). The conflicting lights and darkness images help set the plot of the story. The depression that people had represents darkness while the narrator’s decision to accommodate his brother’s wishes is a representation of light. The narrator uses darkness to refer to his students, who according to him, were lost people. The darkness in the student’s lives is the main reason why they engage in risky activities of taking drugs. The literary analysis of the short story helps an individual understand better its themes and plot.
