Halle Berry Analysis
Halle Berry is an actress and a film producer. In the movie title “Extant” a TV series, she acted as Molly Woods. In this film, Molly’s career was an ISEA astronaut and a scientist who becomes pregnant after envisioning her former dead lover, but this discovery made him start looking for answer. Dr. John Woods was her husband. Ethan Woods was their son. Molly Woods is assigned for a 13 month solo mission aboard the Seraphin space station, (CBS, n.d.). The US magazine lists Halle Berry as one of the celebrities who are battling long-term mental disorders. She is known for attempt to commit suicide in 2007. The cause of her attempt to commit suicide was divorces. Halle separated with her husband “David Justice” in 1997.

Halle admits that she went through a painful divorce with husband David Justice and they had to end their marriage. She continues to admit that her attempt to commit suicide was a result of not able to cope with depression she was going through. Her self esteem was lowest and she wanted to end the pain through suicide, which did not mature.
The clinical symptoms of major depressive disorder include a persistent sense of hopelessness, despair, difficulties of work or sleep, difficulties to enjoy with friends as well as difficulties in attending friend’s activities. Halle Berry felt low at some point in her life due to relationship complications. Other major symptoms associated with major depression include, fatigue, feeling worthless most of the time, loss of energy, impaired decision-making, lack of sleep diminished interest to pleasure and recurring thoughts of death and suicide.

Halle is diagnosed with pattern of thoughts, behaviors and feelings that make her who she is in her everyday life. Halle’s personality disorder feelings are depended on her situation. She was born of an alcohol addict and abusing father. Halle began receiving therapy from abusing parents at the age of 19. Her marriage broke; divorce and single parenting became part of her life. People suffering from personality disorders can be described as shy, lively but selfish. For Halle, the selfishness was seen from her attempt to commit suicide. Since personality disorder does not change much, people with these conditions adopt with time through life experience, but unfortunately their behaviors tend to remain unchanged, difficult to change and with limited range of predictable emotions. Personality disorder makes things difficult for self and for other people. Also, people suffering from personal disorders tend to have behaviors, beliefs and attitudes that are different from those of other people. Their behaviors are unusual and unexpected. A personality is a combination of various attributes that belong to a single person. Each one has its own unique qualities and traits that create an individual that is different from any other human being. How this individuality is formed depends on the environment that a person has lived through and their experiences. Alison Bechdel grew up in a home with a father who alienated himself from his family so that he could conceal a dark secret from his life. Nevertheless, Bechdel was able to take from her past so that she could become a strong and independent women who kept true to who she was. Likewise, straying from the expected path of her family, Dorothy Allison was determined to become the person who she wanted to be. Expressing who she is and not changing to match others expectations has become high priority in Allison’s adult life. It was through a journey of hardship in their childhoods, both Allison and Bechdel were able to discover their individual identities in their adult life.
A personality disorder is an unhealthy group of mental illness (Personality Disorders , 2013). These thoughts and behaviors cause a series of problems in a person’s life. The disorder has often been linked to destruction in social, occupational, and an overall functioning of life (Soeteman, Verheul, & Busschbach, 2008).The person has often had problems associating with other people and managing stress (Personality Disorders , 2013). Personality disorders are consistently noted in a person that has obsessive-compulsive disorder (Butcher, 2010).

According to the DSM5 major depressive describes a person who is in a depressed mood for most of the day, nearly everyday. The person also has a diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the time. There may be significant weight loss or gain as a result of decrease or increase of appetite, respectively. The person may also experience insomnia or hyper insomnia nearly everyday. There may also be a consistent feeling of fatigue or loss of energy. Usually in major depression, there are feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt. It is also common to have a diminished ability to think, concentrate, or experience indecisiveness. All of these symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. (DSM 5, 160-161)

For example you may hear someone say ‘My favorite show is over, now I have nothing to watch, I’m so depressed’. Obviously this person is not depressed, but we have come to overuse it in our expressions, to the point that is takes away from the seriousness of this disorder. Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder characterized by at least two weeks of depressed mood or loss of interest in nearly all activities, along with sleep or eating disturbances, loss of energy, and feelings of hopelessness (Kosslyn, Rosenberg, 2006). This mood disorder is characterized by a depressed mood, lack of interest in activities normally enjoyed, and feeling of worthlessness. Over the course of two weeks, someone who is suffering with major depressive disorder can experience symptoms such as significant weight loss, daily insomnia or hypersomnia, loss of energy, diminished ability to think or concentration, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide (Kosslyn, Rosenberg, 2006).
Every person that has different characteristics that influence how they think, act, and build relationships. While some people are introverted, others are extroverted. Some people are strict and do not take risks, while others are carefree and free spirited. Depression is defined as "a state of despondency marked by feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness" (Coon, 2001). Some people can mix up depression with just having the blues because of a couple of bad days or even weeks. It is already said that depression affects about one sixth of the population or more (Doris, Ebmeier, Shajahan, 1999). Depression can happen in any age range from birth to death. The cause of depression is still obscure and becoming clear that a number of diverse factors are likely to be implicated, both genetic and environmental. Some causes are leading stressful lives, genetic factors, a previous depressive episode, and the personality trait neuroticism (Doris, et al., 1999).
Self-destructive behaviors are also very common in individuals with Borderline personality disorder. Susanna validates this trait by her lack of motivation, conversations about suicide, and her suicide For example; Lisa, the diagnosed sociopath, displays very little empathy for those around her. This is made clear when she sees Daisy’s post suicide body and is not saddened whatsoever. Another accurate portrayal is the patient with anorexia nervosa Janet. Janet refuses to eat, is in denial about her condition, is emotionally labile, and is always exercising.

Depression will affect one 's family life, work, schooling, sleeping habits, eating habits and all around health. No one is immune to depression, it has even affected some of the world 's most famous athletes and movie stars like Olympic gold medalist Clara Hughes or actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Chances are you or someone you know will be affected by depression in their lifetime.
Depression is a mood disorder involving disturbances in emotion (excessive sadness), behavior (loss of interest in one’s usual activities), cognition (thoughts of hopelessness), and body function (fatigue and loss of appetite) (Wade, Tavris 567). Most people don’t even know when depression is happening to them. It usually takes friends, family, or even doctors to notice the symptoms of depression within somebody they know. People that are depressed have the tendency to describe their mood as gloomy, miserable, dreary or uneasy. A lot of victims of depression have additional feelings of worthlessness, doubt, emptiness, pointlessness, unreasonable guilt, boredom, despair, and weakness.
