The roles of men and women have changed in the last 30 years. In this
report I intend to explain what the roles of men and women were like
30 years ago and what the roles of men and women are like now. I will
also give details of why these changes have occurred.
30 years ago the roles of women were very different to that of today.
At the start of our nation's history, women were socialized to attend
exclusively to home and family tasks.
For a woman, marriage was considered to be a girl's destiny. Their
academic curriculum reflected preparing girls for their life as a
housewife and a mother, having domestic sciences instead of the more
academic sciences boys took. Most girls left school as early as
possible, as qualifications were not seen as necessary.
Women were economically dependent on their husbands, as they usually
gave up work when they got married. Women had less power inside and
outside the home.

The roles that men and women were expected to live up to would be called oppressive and offensive by today’s standards, but it was a very different world than the one we have become accustomed to in our time.
Mostly in regards to women, this change is called the gender revolution. They have become much more involved in roles and activities that men were once previously dominating. The biggest change is the increase in workforce. Ever since the 1960’s, it has dramatically increased from under 40% of women in the workforce to now around 70% (273). Also, the feminist movement allowed laws against sex discrimination to assist them even further in having both a career and family. In regards to the impact on men from the gender revolution, their role’s, in comparison to mother roles, has been more resistant but changed nonetheless. Over long periods of time change is often inevitable. One such instance of change throughout history is that of family members and their role in not only the family, but also in society as a whole. Although changes can be seen in the roles of every family member, it can be argued that the role of women in the family, especially that of mothers, changed the most. Between the sixteenth century and the twentieth century, the role that mothers played in the family and in society changed greatly.

Women have clearly done so much for us, but at one time, they weren't even considered "persons." World War 1 was a devastating war for Canada with so many soldiers dead. One good result from the Great War; women's movement. During world war one; men who left for the war in Europe, left jobs at home in Canada. With the increasing demand from Great Britain for food and munitions from Canada, someone had to take over the jobs left. With most of the men gone, the Canadian government turned Canadian women. Opportunities in the job market were opened up to women that were previously closed. This was the greatest change for women in WWI, the tremendous expansion for employment. For women who use to be housewives or in jobs with poor pays, this was an amazing improvement. This one event to allow women to work by Borden started the women movement by the Alberta 5 and the change in a women's traditional role. All efforts made by women at home and overseas started a movement and without their help, an Entente win would have never been in sight. Women's effort and contributions at home in the work industry and overseas as nurses, their home comforts for the soldiers in Europe, and the movement lead by the famous Five, were crucial to the win of the allies in World War One and the change in a women's traditional role.
Suggested roles of all types set the stage for how human beings perceive their life should be. Gender roles are one of the most dangerous roles that society faces today. With all of the controversy applied to male vs. female dominance in households, and in the workplace, there seems to be an argument either way. In the essay, “Men as Success Objects”, the author Warren Farrell explains this threat of society as a whole. Farrell explains the difference of men and women growing up and how they believe their role in society to be. He justifies that it doesn’t just appear in marriage, but in the earliest stages of life. Similarly, in the essay “Roles of Sexes”, real life applications are explored in two different novels. The synthesis between these two essays proves how prevalent roles are in even the smallest part of a concept and how it is relatively an inevitable subject.
Since the beginning of time there has been an ever present divide between the male and female genders in every way. From politics all the way down to expectations, the common denominator in categorizing who takes care of what has always been decided by gender. In earlier times this divide led to the strict and often harsh treatment of women, but as time continued and the emergence of equal rights and feminist movements arose, the divide between the two genders has since begun to close, and has led to better relations between men and women.
When you mention gender roles in society the first thing that comes to mind usually are stereotypes, or the set labels that society has established on how everyone acts based on the different biological, social, and cultural categories they fit into. Gender roles refer to a behavioral and social norms that are widely accepted for people of a certain sex. In this report I will discussing the gender roles of the two most recognized types of gender, man and woman, from the perspective of a man and a woman who have lived 65+ years. I will also discuss how those roles have influenced society and how they have changed gradually over the years.
The Changing Roles and Status of Women In 1903 the suffragette movement was born with the formation of the Women's Social and Political Union (WPSU) by Emmeline Pankhurst and her two daughters Christabel and Sylvia. At first the newly formed suffragettes relied on spreading propaganda to gain support. However, on the 18th October 1905 they gained considerable unplanned publicity when Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney stood up at a public meeting and asked if a Liberal government would introduce women's suffrage. Receiving no reply they stood on their seats waving a banner which said, "votes for women".
Since the beginning of time women and men have had their own set of duties. Society has this chart of what a woman is supposed to do, along with what men are supposed to do. As new eras emerge not only does technology, cultures, ethics, but also the duties of each gender role. I will be explaining the effect of men doing work that is deemed to be a woman’s job. There are a few key terms to understand first in order to comprehend the effect this has on society. The key terms are as follows; Gender roles, gender role socialization, and men gender role.
The perception the public has had on the role of men and women is outdated and has been for some time, but public attitudes change slowly even in the face of overwhelming evidence. Gender plays a big part in life, it is supposed to give a purpose in life, but why? Explaining the severity of knowing why men and women are equal is one step to rebuilding society and the future. Gender relationships are currently defined in American society by historical classifications. Historical representations of gender roles have been carried over to today's culture. The original identities of men and women have survived nearly unchanged throughout time. These are linked to the sexes in a very general way. Men were originally dominant and women, subordinate. Men have always been ideally strong leaders and women, passive and nurturing. These roles have been modernized rather than modified through the years. These standard gender roles and relationships have survived because they remain successful in our culture by satisfying basic needs (Walsh,1987,11).
Before Freud introduced psychoanalysis and psychosexual behavior in the 20th Century, women were extremely confined in their options for their sexuality and sexual behaviors. Women were restricted to the gender roles implemented by the law and customs, as means to enforce traditional marriages between men and women. It was difficult for a woman to form an emotional connection with men because of the deep gender segregation, so they formed close emotional relationships with their close female friends instead. This also made women cautious to form relationships and marry men, so physical intimacy had to be hidden through abortions, lest the woman would be forced into marrying a man she was not entirely ready to commit to.
Society in the U.S. has evolved immensely over the past century. With this evolution there has been a redefinition of what gender and gender roles are and this redefinition has influenced a change in the common structure of families and marriages in the U.S.
The roles of women changed drastically between 1950’s and 1970’s due to the political, economic, and social issues, but women’s lives also stayed close to the way they had always been. The lives of women changed in a plethora of ways throughout the years. “We believe that women can achieve such equality only by accepting to full the challenges and responsibilities they share with all other people in our society, as part of the decision-making mainstream of American political, economic, and social life” (Statement of Purpose, 1966).
The role women play in today’s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past. A woman’s role in today’s society is more valued than ever before.
