Honor Over Time Honor has evolved into what it means today. The meaning of it today is along the lines of respect, freedom, and honesty. Over time honor has changed to mean something different; the way Americans value honor is different than other cultures. Honor has transformed into various meanings over time in the world. Over time honor has dramatically changed. In the Art of Manliness article it states, “chivalrous knights squared off in tournaments for bragging rights and honor” (Dueling History). This shows that in the early days, honor was given to the winners of battles. This can prove that honor was only won, and was not just given. James Bowman, a scholar and writer, suggests that, “we are living in a ‘post-honor society’” (Punn). In short, we are living in a civilization where honor is not as prominent as it used to be. Honor was different during the victorian age, that was a time when men lived to stand up for his principles. One way, as stated by WenWen Zhang, who teaches chinese for a living, is, “In China we have a holiday for people to honor their deceased relatives and friends” (Zhang). This shows that in the chinese culture they honor the people who have passed. They honor the people in very systematic ways and show an ongoing love throughout their lives. The Chinese people, according to The University of Victoria, “the Chinese pray to their ancestors as well as to all the gods” (15-day Celebration). Chinese people are very persistent about honoring and respecting not only their elders, but also the gods and other important people in their lives. In a different perspective, Americans do not usually honor their deceased loved ones daily. This proves that the chinese culture is better at sacrificing things for their elders and honoring them daily. Honor is different every where in the world in both big and small ways.
