Introduction Cesar Chavez was one of the most influential social figures in the 20th century due to what he did during his time. He not only would influence others, but would also use actions to get the support of his movement. He would uses actions like nonviolence to show that violence was not the answer and not the key way to accomplish the goals that he and the union had. He would also have to sacrifice his own health and fast for 25 days to show his union a lesson. And in the movie, it states how Cesar Chavez was an iconic “symbol to the movement” due to his injury when walking to the capital (Viva La Causa). He had some traits like vison, concern, and courage that most leaders have. This is all stated in the Campbell article (2002) …show more content…
Cesar "wanted to get away from the interruptions that constantly arose from having the union headquarters located near an urban center and a major highway" due to him feeling too dependent and moving to the place would make it a local decision." (Del Castillo). This shows courage because he didn't want people to be dependending on him do all the work, he moved to a place were people so the people can be more involved in the situation and have them fight for the rights of the farmworkers as well. This is also demonstrating how they'd encouraged to make decisions as well and not depend so much on Cesar because it was a team that was working for the same cause. Another way he demonstrates courage to us in in the article when it says how Cesar Chavez had to drop out of school when he was in middle school to help out his father in the fields. Not only that but the article also mentions that Cesar Chavez fasted in 1968 to show his followers and this organization that nonviolence is the way to fight for their cause. Overall, there were many factors to which who influenced Cesar Chavez the most. Some key factors were people like Mahatma Gandhi. In the UFW article it states that “ the idea of that nonviolence could be an active force for change.” (Tejada-flores) Another factor was the union and the people involved with it. They would always support his ideas and actions even though if they agree with it. Another factor would be his father due to how it states in the UFW article that “ his father taught him the value of hard work and opened his eyes to the inequities of the farm labor system.”(Tejada-Flores) Another person that influenced Cesar Chavez also was a man called Fred Ross. He is mention in the article that he taught Cesar Chavez “how to organize to deal with problems like police violence and
The Cuban historical film, La Última Cena, or The Last Supper, takes place at a plantation in Havana at the end of the 18th century. In an effort to respect the holy week and to teach his slaves about Christianity, a sanctimonious plantation owner invites twelve of his slaves to dinner with him to reenact the last supper. During the dinner, the Count tries to influence his slaves towards Christianity and feeds them religious rhetoric. As the night goes on, the Count gets drunk and begins to make promises to his slaves in an attempt to seem more Christ-like. The next day, Good Friday, his promises are not kept and the slaves revolt. Because of the rebellion, the twelve slaves that ate dinner with the Count are all hunted down and killed except for one. This film can be further explained through the concepts of three theorists, Aimé Césaire, Homi K. Bhabha, and W.E.B. DuBois.
The movie Bernie is true story of a murder committed in Carthage, Texas in 1996. What set this crime apart from other murders was the reaction of the citizens. Bernie Tiede shot and killed Marjorie Nugent in November 1996. The people of Carthage were more worried about Bernie’s fate than his act of murdering Marjorie.
In 1938, the Chavez family lost their farm due to the Great Depression. They were forced to relocate to California and become migrant workers. Chavez was distressed by the poor treatment that migrant farmworkers endured on a daily basis. His powerful religious convictions, dedication to change, and a skill at non violent organizing cultivated the establishment of the United Farmworkers (UFW). It was also referred to as “La Causa” by supporters and eventually became a vital movement for self-determination in the lives of California's farmworkers. The astounding nationwide lettuce and grape boycotts along with public support revealed the atrocities of California agribusiness and resulted in the first union hiring halls and collective bargaining for migrant workers. The details of the childhood of Cesar Chavez and how they would later shape his actions are a vital aspect of this book and the establishment of the farm workers movement.
With pure intension the people understood a bit more what Cesar Chavez was trying to do. They saw that he was not only fighting for equality but for other things as well. They also saw that he would do almost anything to be able to reach that goal. Cesar Chavez proved that he would do almost anything when they protested with the 250 mile
Cesar chavez (1927-1993) was a civil rights leader. He is most famous for creating the National Farm Workers Association. Chavez grew up in Arizona on his family’s farm. When the depression hit, Chavez was 11 years old, and his family lost their farm and were forced to become migrant workers. The working conditions on the farms Chavez and his family worked on were horrible. This later inspired him to make a union for farm workers, the National Farm Workers Association. He is known for being an activist of civil rights for Latinos, rights for farm workers, and also for animal rights.
Through the years, individuals have shown that a single man can make a difference. Men who, when committed to a cause, will rise up with honor, integrity, and courage. Cesar Chavez was such a man. He represented the people and rose above his self concerns to meet the needs of the people. Cesar Chavez showed us that, “The highest form of freedom carries with it the greatest measure of discipline.” He lived by this standard and fought freedom with the highest form of dignity and character.
Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) is most known for his efforts for the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Martin Luther King Jr.’s leadership style is best described as charismatic. The Mexican-American Cesar Chavez has changed the lives of many people. He was a kind man who devoted his life into helping people. He was a great union leader and labor organizer. Chavez’s parents taught him about the important ideas of hard work, the importance of education, and about respect. Cesar Chavez had a positive social impact on the United States during the twentieth century because he changed the lives of many farm laborers in America.
Both of the speeches, Martin Luther King's and Cesar Chavez', are powerful peices and communicate one vision: equality. King and Chavez have two very different styles of writing but the message from both is simmilar. for example both king and chavez discuss how their people are discriminated against because of their skin color, and how their people have neither the right to vote in the the south, nor the will to vote in the north , and in Chavez' situation, to have their vote counted. however similar their message's may be, their writing styles are different. Chavez talks about statistics, about why and how his people are treated. king held that the atrocitys commited against his people were self evident and as such did not need to be proved to anyone. kings message was meant to encompass the entire Uninted States while Chavez' was directed primarily at California.
Senator Robert F. Kennedy described him as “one of the heroic figures of our time” (Cesar Chavez Foundation). This shows that Cesar Chavez made a difference in people’s lives, including Senator Robert’s. Some people may say that immigrants are bad people but Cesar Chavez was an immigrant himself yet, also a hero to the country. Experts say he was an American farm worker, labor leader, and a civil rights activist. This shows that he fought for what he believed in. Being a farm worker wasn’t something he planned on doing but he had no choice because he was an immigrant. He saw how cruel Americans were treating immigrants so he fought for their rights. He spoke for all the immigrants everywhere. The Cesar Chavez Foundation mentioned that at age 11, his family lost their farm during the great depression and became migrant farm workers. This shows how and why Cesar Chavez fought for farmworkers rights. He grew up not having the best childhood but he took others lives into consideration and fought for them to have a better and brighter
One of the greatest civil rights activists of our time; one who believed the ways of Gandhi and Martin Luther King that “violence can only hurt us and our cause” (Cesar Chavez); a quiet, devoted, small catholic man who had nothing just like those he help fight for; “one of America's most influential labor leaders of the late twentieth century” (Griswold del Castillo); and one “who became the most important Mexican-American leader in the history of the United States” (Ender). Cesar Chavez; an American farm worker, who would soon become the labor leader that led to numerous improvements for union workers; it is recorded that Chavez was born near Yuma, Arizona on March 31, 1927 and died on April 23, 1993 in San Luis, Arizona. (Wikipedia) His life affected many others as his unselfish deeds changed the labor union force forever. This essay will discuss the reasons Cesar Chavez became involved in Union rights, the immediate impact he had, and also the legacy he left behind with his actions that influenced American society.
As a leader, he proved that even small community leaders can have a large impact. When he was beginning his activism, he started small. In 1973, Milk opened a camera store on Castro Street in San Francisco, which would serve to be the hub of the gay rights political movement of the area. When running for office, Castro Camera would serve as a polling station, allowing the members of the community to come right to the place they’ve known in order to vote. Milk carved a space for the community, staying true, and creating personal connection with the people in that community. He was an effective leader because he put himself on an equal plane with the people he was trying to serve.
Leadership is not about the power; it’s about what the person would do or have done to deserve the leadership spot. Martin luther King Jr. did not say that he wanted to be the leader of the civil rights movement, but people choose him as the leader of the movement though. Unlike King, the pigs from the book Animal Farm wanted to rule the farm and to be more powerful than any other on the farm. Unlike the pigs in Animal Farm, Martin Luther King Jr. embodies the characteristics of a strong leader because he was empowering, passionate, and was respected.
Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves. Martin Luther King was pushed to the edge when being jailed for protest, But through all he prevailed and overcame. Bravery
He goes from “Greatness equals top, powerful, master, first, ruler, adult to Greatness equals bottom, servant, slave, last, child” (Kraybill, 2011, p.229). This equation shows how people that are powerful and first are not the true meaning of greatness and those that are humble, at the bottom, and servants are what true greatness really means. Many of the characteristics that adults talked about on the interviews are what true greatness means. The one adult that did not say God as one great person chose Cesar Chavez and he was a humble person that was not at the top but made a great impact in helping
