Centrelink Office Observation

On the 30th of July 2015, at 1pm, I visited a public waiting area of my local Centrelink office at Suter Street, Southport. This essay will discuss the observations and reflections that I made about the organisations physical location and layout, available information, atmosphere and ambience. This essay will also examine the strengths and limitations of each of these topics. The physical location of the Centrelink office was overall very pleasing. As I do not own a car I relied on public transport to arrive at the office. The building was about 300 metres away from the tram station. Due to the close proximity of public transport, clients who do not have access to their own personal vehicle can still visit the office with ease. For clients that do have access to their own cars there were also a number of parking options around the agency. These options included parallel street parking, the car park behind the agency or the undercover parking in the building next door. When walking through the door, straight away I was met with a line of clients looking to attend their appointments. This area was open and allowed for people to stand in a line without feeling as though their personal space was being invaded. As I looked around the office it was easy to distinguish the different areas and the purpose of each of these areas. The waiting room, the one on one desks and the computer space were separate and easily discernable from one another. The openness of the office was a positive quality as it allowed everyone present in the office to have his or her own personal space, this in turn helps clients to feel comfortable.
