The causes of homelessness
“You think I want this life? You think I want this life?....I hate this life,” (Out in the Cold). A man named Jerry said this when John Koepke and J.D. O’Brien interviewed him on the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Koepke and O’Brien were making a documentary about the homeless called Out in the Cold based off of real interviews with several homeless people as they spent a week in winter living in shelters or on the streets. They created this documentary to create awareness for the homeless and to create sympathy for them. Many times Americans look down on people who are homeless, but most of the time the homeless do not have any choice. Being homeless is not their fault because of certain circumstances in their life. These circumstances are: a loss of a job, unable to pay their bills, or their parents abandoned them.
Typically, people are homeless because they have just lost their job. Many people nowadays are getting laid off their job or getting fired. Many companies move around or the company cannot afford to pay their employees. …show more content…

Many times people who end up homeless do not grow up in the best of homes. Most of the time they do not have very stable homes or they were born homeless. For example, Monty became homeless when he was thirteen or fourteen years old because his home-life was so terrible that he would not be living today if he had not left. Also, their families could have left them because they have a physical or mental disability. In 2016, 564,708 people in the United States are homeless and 83,170 of those people are chronically homeless (2016’s Shocking Homelessness). That means that they have a disability, such as behavioral health problems, mental illnesses, substance use disorders, physical illnesses, injury, or trauma.
