Reflecting off the “cause and effect” poem “Barbie’s little Sister” by Ellie Schoenfeld, it is difficult dealing with the pressures of the outside world, especially these days. How are you influenced by what you see around you—by images in magazines, in advertisements, in films, in music, and in TV? It seems these days that we are influenced by media and everything in America. Magazines make us want to lose weight and be like the girl in the pictures, which makes be somebody we are not and buy things we do not need. Advertisements and TV are about the same, they make you want things you do not have and eventually buy the product or service. TV shows us how things are in TV life, which a lot of the time is not real. It shows us how …show more content…
Do they ever make you do things that you shouldn’t, feel bad about yourself, or feel pressured to change or conform? If someone were to spend too much time watching TV, listening to media and playing video games, our behavior and attitude becomes negative, withdrawn and depressing. Just like listening to bad music, it can cause an impact on your life and others around you. To buying things we do not need to self image, it all impacts our minds and makes us think bad things about ourselves and others. Bulling is also a factor in excessive TV watching, images in magazines and media. Of course, there are other factors too; home life and how your parents raised …show more content…
These points include: • Your physical self-size, proportion, weight and appearance- covered in the paragraph above. • Your values and expectations in life. How do you measure success? Happiness? My values all stem from God the Father and His son Jesus Christ. My family, God and my career are my successes and happiness. My expectations are to be the best I can be and to always keep trying. You can do anything you put your mind to and never give up. • Your possessions- I have a lot of possessions, but I would say my electronics really do a lot for me each day and I’m grateful for them. My cell phone, tablet and laptop get my class work done, daily tasks and leisure time. • Your profession(s) - I worked as a C.N.A Certified Nurses Aid for 8 years and I’m currently working as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) for 3 year now, the second longest job I have ever had. My Future career is still ongoing, but I hope to graduate at the end of December 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration. I learned about being a C.N.A through unemployment, which I never received because I got a job. I learned about pharmacy technicians online and went to school at Everest College to become
“Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy and “ David Talamentez on the Last Day of Second Grade” by Rosemary Catacalos are two poems that show a unique view into society and the roles society expects people to fill. Sometimes those expectations can lead people to take drastic measures or even cause defiance in some people. The irony of this is that it seems the more we push people to be what society wants the more it drives them to be what they don’t want.
In Marge Piercy’s, “Barbie Doll,” we see the effect that society has on the expectations of women. A woman, like the girl described in ‘Barbie Doll’, should be perfect. She should know how to cook and clean, but most importantly be attractive according to the impossible stereotypes of womanly beauty. Many women in today’s society are compared to the unrealistic life and form of the doll. The doll, throughout many years, has transformed itself from a popular toy to a role model for actual women. The extremes to which women take this role model are implicated in this short, yet truthful poem.
...f mines. My possessions are tied to memories and experiences I have gone through, and without them, I would not be how I am today.
“The images produced by popular culture play a real role in shaping people’s perceptions (Bird 11).
In real life, a Barbie Doll would be five feet six inches tall, with a size two waist, and size two hips. The measurement are impossible. A woman with those measurements would have trouble standing and going about her daily life. “The Barbie doll has become part of the American psyche and it sets unrealistic standards for the female body” (Chamberlain 1). Young girls grow up with Barbie Dolls in hands, dreaming of the day that they’ll be grown and look like the doll they hold so dearly. Some girls fight the stereotypes, they resist. Inevitably they grow weary, fighting societies pressures is not an easy battle. Thus they give up, and live to please society. The poem “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy shows how expectations put upon women in their
Media plays a big part the routine of everyday life. Images, shows, commercials, music and radio all play a big role in life. Such a big role that it effects perspective and persuades people to certain agendas and messages that is not always clears out right. How do messages get across? Visual imagery and subliminal and supraliminal persuasion are three theories that play a big role in what is affecting everyday thought processes.
I started off volunteering in the department of patient escort services and then I was transferred into the emergency room. For patient escort, I mainly discharge patients and provide assistance to hospital visitors. For the emergency room, I bring patients who come into the emergency room to the imaging department, where they can take their X-rays, ultrasound, or CAT scans. I got the opportunity to interact with physician assistants and other health professionals. In addition to volunteering, I have also shadowed a physician assistant at Children’s Hospital. After interacting with physician assistant and learn more about the career, I soon came to realize that the physician assistant is not the career I want to pursue and I am more interested in the field of pharmacy. I became confident that pharmacy is the right career for me after working at a pharmacy for a several months and got a glance to the occupation. I enjoy learning about all the different medications as well as the healthcare
In grade school, we were assigned to write papers about what our dream job is or who we aspire to be. Year after year, they prepare you to write one of the most significant essays in your life, the one that determines your future. In middle school, our teachers had us research the job we wanted to pursue in life and write a paper on it. I chose to research a nurse practitioner. The more research I did, the more I became invested in the profession. From then on, I have been preparing for what I’ve aspired to be, a nurse. I am currently enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant class at Southeast Community College. I also work at a retirement home where I have been a server for over a year, and both have aided me to build relationships with residents
They include my laptop, iPhone, and the accessories that go with my laptop and iPhone. My laptop has a specific meaning to me because it is where I store all my personal information: class work, projects, and assignments. It is also where I can open my email or send important ones. It is also where I
To me success is knowing that I gave it my all in school and other hobbies outside of school. Also, another meaning is that I try the best I can and tried my hardest. Also if I don’t make a high school program, so what, it would not be the end of the world, but it also can mean to a new beginning of my journey. What is important to me? The most important to me is family, friend, and education. Family, friend, and education are everything to me, without them I have no life. What do I value? What I value is something that is important to me family, friend, and education. The reason I value friendship, family, and education because that is what you need to live, as a result these three things is the only thing to live and your life would be
Media also influences the thinking of people and society in general through entertainment as well as advertising and marketing campaigns. It is the creative ideas and boost to the imagination that people get once they watch a television show, movie, commercial or listen to a certain song. The impact any of these forms of media can have on an individual’s thinking can change in that most of them view the various stars in the movies, TV or the music industry as role models and as a result, they start imitating them. This type of influence oftentimes will influence the way someone views a political
Aside from my phone and laptop, I have my iPad that is used for when I am relaxing back at my dorm room, where I play games, watching Netflix and YouTube, and perusing the internet. The school library offers me a place to go for free, where I can check out books, complete my homework, and have access to computers that are available for students. Books are a way in which I can keep myself entertained, learn about other people and places, and get lost in new worlds. The next material object in my possession, is my toy collection. This may be laughable, but it makes me happy.
According to experts, children who watch too much TV tend to be less interested in physical activity, often develop verbal skills more slowly and tend to be less confident in social situations.
Personal success for me is being able enjoy little things that life has to offer. For instance; understanding and appreciating diversity. To have someone to love and treasure, to meet the right person, fall in love, and get marry. To feel that I’m able to love my child and pass on wisdom to him .Feeling that someone loves me, is something that makes me completely happy and successful. Because I believe that without love, life is not thoroughly complete, thus never truly achieve success. I believe that, by being mentally and physically healthy, I have achieved personal success. When I get home to see my loving husband, my loved child, and then I’m able to sit down, relax and appreciate life, then I’m successful in my own right.
When we have been exposed to media it begins to affect to way we think, and act, sometimes in the negative ways. We as individuals have a natural tendency to imitate with our behavior to outside
