The Real World

In his book The Catcher In The Rye, J.D. Salinger Displays, through the main character Holden, that lying and deception are prominent in the real world. He shows that and in the pain of growing up you have much to experience and much to learn about life, people and the world. There are many instances in The Catcher In The Rye where this is apparent and also many critics have supported this in their critical analyses.
All through the novel, Holden refers to people as "phonies" and constantly points out the every negative aspect of society. Holden is a negative, vulgar, neurotic pessimist. Salinger writes the novel through the eyes of Holden, purposely, to allow is to see the corruptness and fakeness of society through a teenager’s confused and somewhat innocent mind. "Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone." (Pg. 122 Holden Caulfield) This quote shows how Salinger is letting us see into the mind of Holden and how he thinks so basically and unrealistically. It shows the innocence and “childlike” side to him and how little he really understands about reality.
As the book progresses, Holden’s experiences teach him more and more about how life and society really are. He encounters many complicated situations and ideas that he does not understand. “…Holden’s exasperation is overstated…confusion about sexuality and death…” (Pg. 73 Sanford Pinsker). This quote shows how Sanford Pinsker interprets Holden’s remarks as confusion and uncertainty of complex “adult” emotions and ideas.
