The soldiers must commit themselves to the war without knowing when their commander’s mind will change. Catch-22 as a symbol throughout the book relates to the theme as stated by Cliff Notes, “The code under which the airmen of the 256th Squadron exist is embodied in the theme of Catch-22. As a general rule covering most behavior, it establishes that the men who fight the war are going to have to do what those in authority tell them; and there is no way out of that” (2). Catch-22 is a symbol for military authority. It states that someone can be grounded if they are crazy, but if they ask to be grounded means they aren't crazy and cannot be grounded. In the beginning of the novel Dunbar explains, “You're inches away from death every time you go on a mission. How much older can you be at your age” (Heller, 39). Dunbar explains his obsession with growing old and slowing down time to Clevinger. Dunbar no longer wants to be involved in the dangerous missions because he realizes that he wants to be able to go home at the end of the war to his family. This quote represents the absurdity of the war and the people involved. According to Kennard, author of Joseph Heller: At War With Absurdity, “Heller's vision of the horrifying absurdity of service life in World War II is, as the constant references in [Catch-22] to its wider implications indicate, merely an illustration of the absurdity of the human condition itself.” Heller's story is an illustration of how absurd war can make the lives of humans. Heller's personal experiences, during his time in World War II, helped to make these references because he was able to connect his incidents with the characters’ personalities in the book. The absurdity of the war and the human condition contributes to the hardships because anything can wildly unreasonable, illogical, or inappropriate can happen at any time.
