Four journalists named Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Myers thought it would be a good idea to create a nonprofit organization to help animals that have are treated cruelly by either abuse or when they are left alone. The Humane Society has been helping animals since November 24, 1954(2). Their mission since the beginning has been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. There are a great number of things that the Humane Society has been doing for the animals, like saving them from people who want to harm them. No animal should have to ever be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill shelters save more money than other shelters.
The humane society is a nonprofit organization, which is a corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive. The humane society is also a 501c, a nonprofit American tax-exempt organization. It was founded in 1954 by Fred Myers (1904-1963), its first name was the National Humane Society, later named The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Their first mission was to decrease suffering of livestock during slaughter. The Humane Slaughter Act passed in 1958, this would change the lives of millions of animals around America. The Humane Society began investigating animal experimentation around the 1950s to gather evidence on animal neglect or suffering. Myers said,” every humane society should be actively concerned about the treatment accorded to such a vast number of animals.” In 1961 HSUS investigated dog dealers in the U.S. to gain support for a law to be passed that would prevent cruelty to animals in laboratories. The investigation lasted 5 years, then in February 1966 life magazine published an essay about dog dealers and thousands of Americans wrote to their congressional representatives and demanded action to protect animals and stop pet theft. Later that year the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 was passed, the second major federal humane law passed since world war II. Other goals they had during this time were: reduce homeless dogs and cats, reform inhumane euthanasia practices, redact abuses by pet stores and pet breeding trades, and help wildlife and marine life. Most people are familiar with service dogs and have seen them in action. Animal-assisted therapy is similar service animals in that an animal-human healing partnership is being created. However, the difference is that therapy pets are typically used to treat a mental disability whereas people with physical disabilities use service dogs to help them in many ways. Therapy animals are used in a wide variety of places, such as, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, therapy sessions, mental healthcare facilities, and even in people’s homes. These amazing animals are used on a wide variety of different disorders, but they are utilized mostly by people suffering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD. For people with these mental health disorders, everything in live can be difficult and challenging, however with the help of animal-assisted therapy, their mood, motivation, and life can dramatically improve. Anyone who hears about these brave, loving animals soon falls in love with them. From a medical standpoint, there have been many successful studies and the support for animal-assisted therapy still continues to grow in doctors and therapists across the nation.
The word Humane, as defined, is characterized by tenderness, compassion and sympathy for humans and animals. As a society we expect these characteristics from everyone, whether it is toward people or animals. However our view seems to change when it comes to factory animals. It may be ignorance or lack of not caring, but factory animals are not held to the same humane standards we have for each other and other animals. Food labels have deceived the consumer into believing they are bettering the life of the animals when in fact we are hardly changing it.

This organization stands for American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They have accomplished all of the above and much more. From providing millions of animals with adequate shelter, and the proper care they deserve, the ASPCA is a charitable organization that positively impacts the nation. People can only imagine the horror of having to give up a pet for reasons beyond their control, they would be devastated for sure. More importantly, they would want to find a place that would provide their pet with a loving home, and people who would care for it as they have. The ASPCA has a reputation that wouldn't leave pet owners with any doubts about the safety and well-being of their pets.

You may or may not continue your normal life and not even think twice about those animals, but if you do remember were the only ones who save them. They will continue to sit there and be torched if we don’t do anything about it. Animals will continue to die every day if we don’t help them. People will continue to abuse them and neglect them. There are things we can do to help and we are not obligated, but it would be appreciated. Every time you help a shelter by donating they are able to continue feeding, giving shelter and medical attention to the animals who don’t have any of these simple things.Giving just a small amount of money allows them to bring in more dogs. For those dogs that could mean life or death. I hope this changed your perspective on some of the associations that were once considered innocent.

This is an extremely large amount of animals that are not wanted and the biggest way you can help is to spay and neuter your pets, and encourage others to do the same. Nationwide there are more than 3-4 million dogs and cats who are healthy and ready for adoption, but are sadly euthanized due to overpopulation (Bushby & Griffin, 2011). No matter how responsible you are as a pet owner, you never know when your dog or cat may sneak out and the only way to be sure you do not contribute to this extreme overpopulation is to spay or neuter your pet (“Why you,” n.d.). There are many reasons aside from overpopulation that neutering is beneficial, including the reduction of behavioral problems and health concerns.
