Cao Dai literally means “high tower, the place God reins.” Ngo Van Chieu, the “founder” of Caodaism once said, “That 's the reason God has founded Cao Dai, in order to bring harmony to different religions. And the principle of Cao Dai is that religions are not different and if we take enough time to study deep --deeply enough in each religion, we would see that they have one same principal, if not identical principal.” Cao Dai was founded in 1926 and is a Vietnamese religion. Chieu took part in a séance ritual and said that he received a revelation and then formed Caodaism.
How did he organize Caodaism and how many followers are there? According to Religionfacts.com, there are 2-6 million adherent followers of Caodaism. Why do they have so many followers? On October 27, 2011 there was a meeting between Cao Dais and Catholics. The meeting was called “Together Make Peace.” According to the Official Vatican Network, the consensus of the meeting was that “all religions are lead a life of prayer, visiting religious communities, respecting differences, discovering common values of different religious traditions, serving the poor and marginalized, and working together for the common good.” There are many other dialogues, but this is the most recent gathering to find common ground between Cao Dai and Catholics.

Since the introduction of Buddhism into China, it was not well received by the population as its foreign beliefs clashed with pre-existent principals of Confucianism and Taoism. On top of that, it was alienated by the Confucianism-based government in the late Han Dynasty. All in all, Buddhism was not a common nor a popular religion throughout China at first. Nevertheless, this all changed after the rise of the Tang Dynasty. There is no doubt that Buddhism and the Tang administration under Wu’s reign formed a critical symbiotic relationship with one another. Buddhism played a pivotal role in justifying Empress Wu’s rule. She enthroned herself as the monarch of China, an extraordinarily difficult achievement for a woman in a male-dominant society, by associating herself with Buddhism: proclaiming herself as the Maitreya and that she will bring an utopian era for the Chinese. (Smarr, 17 Feb. 2012) At the same time, Buddhism benefitted handsomely from government support, as monasteries are exempted from tax and that they are financially supported by the state, as seen in A Pilgrim’s Visit to the Five Terraces Mountains, which ultimately resulted in the substantial growth in attraction of Buddhist converts and Buddhism itself. Wu’s extensive support of the religion with ostentatious gifts and donations contributed to the rapid proliferation of Buddhism. Although the Han Dynasty used Confucianism mainly as a practical philosophy and moral code by which they should live, Daoism was also practiced at the same time as a religion as well. Also, later in the Han Dynasty, Buddhism came to flower in China, which came from India. Daoism entails the concept of all things at equilibrium, as well as being one with a basic life force or nature. The Gupta Empire favored the usage of Hinduism, although Buddhism was still practiced at that time by the people. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion that entails the concepts of the caste system, reincarnation, karma, dharma, and the goal of being one with Brahman, which is called moksha. Buddhism is similar in most aspects except in the belief of the necessity of the caste system. The Han Dynasty and the Gupta Empire are similar in their religion in that both brought about the renewal of an old way of life that used to be more prevalent. Religion was very important to the Huang He Civilization; the early religion of the Huang He people was polytheistic, meaning they had more than one. They believed in supernatural forces and that they could communicate with dead ancestors that were in the afterlife with oracle bones and also that spirits, kings and dead ancestors could help them have a good future. Confucianism and Taoism (also known as Daoism) existed in the area since about 450 BC and Buddhism hit the area in 110 BC – 220 AD and became the main religion in that area. One of the many dynasties near the Huang He River that was called the Shang Dynasty worshipped a God named Shang Di who ruled over Gods of the sun, moon, wind, rain and other natural forces.
During the Warring States period China was going through chaos. The teachings of Confucianism and Daoism were welcomed by society to bring order, stability and liberate people from the misery and oppression. The rulers were greedy and desirous of political power and their own agendas; however they were looking for a new way to unite their people. It is often said that Confucianism and Daoism are the yang and yin, respectively, of Chinese religion. That is, they are not rivals so much as complementary traditions, working together to produce an overall balance in the lives of the Chinese. This is not true because the two religious philosophies were different from one another. Confucius believed that the traditions and virtues that were studied and taught in the old days by the Ancients was the best way to organize society (trickle-down approach). Also followers of Confucius believed in education, a moral force and human goodness to advance and progress within society. Daoism on the other hand relies on human nature and a balance of good and evil (Yin-Yang) to bring about social order. It neglects education, virtue and cultural norms because it is said that people are born faultless.

The fact of the matter is, religion has been around since the beginning of mankind; religion gave people faith, structure, and a way of life. Without it people begin to lose their sense of direction and purpose. In today’s society there are over 4,200 religions, and they continue to aid people in their life and accommodate to their needs of self-knowledge. Reaching harmony with the world is important in Confucianism (Confucianism.pptx, 4). Confucius placed an importance on harmony in the family, he believed that it lead to a better society (Wilkinson, 242). Harmony starts at the top. The ruler has to give sacrifices to heaven “to insure his mandate to rule” (Confucianism.pptx, 5). These practices were already around before Confucius, he did however support many of the old traditions (Confucianism.pptx, 13). Taiji, the ultimate reality, “is an unknowable absolute force that orders the universe” (Wilkinson, 242). People believe that with enough meditation, contemplation, mental discipline and the pursuit of knowledge can lead them to a “unity with Taiji” (Wilkinson, 242). Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism are religions that also act as a complete way of life guiding ethics and philosophy. These Asian traditions emerged as an explanation of mortality and have a long history of mutual influence on China, India, and Japan, developing during a time of war and political instability. These three schools of thought each have no gods and teach in improving the followers relationship with the universe.
