In today's society, the overconsumption of goods is an issue that most are blind to. A solution to this problem would be to have an annual "Buy Nothing Day" in which stores close down and people are asked to go a full twenty four hours without buying anything ranging from clothing to groceries. Including a Buy Nothing Day along with all of the other national holidays would be beneficial in raising awareness for overconsumption of goods, giving a day off to stores that support this holiday, and by encouraging healthy ethical and environmental habits for the community as a whole. Because of these reasons, a Buy Nothing Day should be established in favor of the health of the community and the health of the earth. By establishing a buy nothing day, people will be encouraged to buy less and recycle more. To fix a problem, we must first address it. A day dedicated to raising awareness for over consumption would have the same effect as Earth Day: encouraging the community to promote healthier environmental habits. secondly, establishing a national holidy in which the community is asked to take a day off from buying goods would give stores the chance to have a day off. If the local grocery stores in a community encouraged the good habits of a Buy Nothing Day, then people would support it too. Some argue that an annual Buy Nothing day would not work out due to the fact that people need to buy things sometimes. HAving thi holiday annually would give people the chance to prepare for the up coming date. Having this holiday would give everyone in the community a nice detox from overconsumption. Lastly an annual buy Nothing Day would encourage better ethical and environmental habits for the communit as a whole. It qould encourage better ethical thinking by not encouraging the consumption of material
