Therefore having a good role model during adolescence is important to help oppose to the negative influences they come across. Role models are usually the parents, teachers, friends or older siblings, they usually learn and copy their behaviour, for example if a friend did well at school, they would feel motivated to do better themselves.
However poor role models during adolescence can have negative impact on the children, like peer pressure leads children to take part in activities that are not socially accepted, or may develop harmful habits such as smoking, drinking, illegal drugs or join gangs to have the sense of belonging (Oetting, and Beauvais, 1987). From the book it is clear that Orwell (1974) was bullied verbally by his peers, and the impact was eventually convincing him to undervalue himself, and accept their abuse to be the truth as true “I continued to believe that I was preternaturally ugly. It was what my schoolfellows had told me” (Orwell 1947, p.43). Bullying still exists mainly in secondary school, in fact it is in the increase in today’s society, whether it is physical, verbal or social bullying (Pellegrini and Long, 2002). Children who are subject to bullying are at the risk of damaging self worth like Orwell (1975) also various other illness due to stress, including mental health, the serious unfortunate results is suicide. The studies show that during adolescence young people face more social bullying; this may be due to taking part in more social networking (Horner, Asher and Fireman, 2015). Emotional problems caused by bullying may have an impact on their learning outcomes, and social behaviour, for instance turning to alcohol or drug to deal with the situation (stopbullying.gov, 2012). People have grown more open about their sexuality, from being accompanied by a chaperone, to courting a woman for marriage in the 1900’s; it has changed to being in a relationship only for fun. Throughout adolescence the experience of attachment among lovers starts to develop with experiencing intimacy. Cultural believe has a big impact in sexuality, for example in some cultures homosexuality, and pre marriage relationships is forbidden due to their faith, therefore the gay, lesbian and bisexual adolescents faces more problems with their sexual orientations than other adolescents in general, which may perhaps lead them to difficulties such as turning to drinking, smoking or even committing suicide (Arnett, 2007). for the period of adolescence some young people experience confusion and insecurity about their sexuality, for instance a young person may struggle to understand what they are going though at the time, or identify their sexuality, during which they may go through problems, or show aggressions because they are ashamed or embarrassed, or even fear of being at risk of harm because due to culture or background they come from. However in Britain these changes are accepted not only by the society but by law as well such as the Equality act
