Children can be very wary when it comes to meeting new people, which is why it is even more important to be able to know how to properly build and maintain a relationship with them, a relationship in which they will be comfortable in. The most important factor in building a relationship with anyone - not just children, is trust. Children need to be able to have that trust in you which will allow them to be open with you and allow you into their lives without being cautious. In order for adults to build meaningful relationships with children, children need to make sure that they always feel welcome and safe around you. This way the children will be able to get to know the adult a lot better and that trust and respect will automatically start growing.
Furthermore, it is even more important to be able to mantain that relationship you built with the children. One factor in maintaining a relationship with a child is to create a sense of belonging, making sure the child is never feeling 'left out' or discriminated against. All children should be treated equally, and should all be included in everyday tasks. When a child is ever feeling like they are not getting the same treatment as the others, they will immediately start to feel uncomfortable around you and that 'trust' and 'warm welcome' from your side will dissapear. Moreover, being approachable at all times is very important. If you are not approachable, it will be difficult for children to come to you and express their feelings and will go into a shell. Therefore, as an adult, you should be able to make sure that you build a secure relationship with young people in order to know what they are feeling. Giving encouragment especially to young people can be quite significant in building and maintaining relationships with them. Encouraging them on what they do well rather than put them down on when they do something wrong, will allow them to be more open with you and build a stronger foundation of trust between both parties. Communication skills are also key when it comes to young people. Being able to communicate with them properly and more importanly listen to them and give them time to speak allows them to not only gain a better understanding of you, but also builds more trust between yourself and the young person.
In order to build and maintain relationships with adults it is important to show simple respect and courtesy, for example, simply just saying 'thank you' to being able to listen to others, and communicating well with them. Communication is not only about how you use your words, but also your body language, and facial expressions. You should be able to feel empathy towards the
