Guilty Or Innocent In this essay I will present the evidence that proves that Brother is guilty of the death of his brother Doodle. All the evidence presented in this essay is from the story "The Scarlet Ibis" written by James Hurst. There are three reasons, which I will give, of why I find Brother guilty of his brother's death. I shall also provide the evidence from the story that proves each reason correct. Brother knew that Doodle had fallen and yet he kept going. The story, in the perspective of Brother, says "I heard Doodle, who had fallen behind, cry out,". Had brother not Doodle behind he wouldn't have died. Brother knew that Doodle could not keep up so he ran as fast as he could from Doodle whose heart was weak and had the possibility of his heart giving out on him. …show more content…

After Doodle fell and got back up Brother said "We never spoke (what are the words that can solder cracked pride?)". Brother's pride was hurt when his brother fell in the first day of school which made Brother's anger rise against his brother. Brother, for a moment, saw Doodle as a disappointment and so he left Doodle behind, laying on the ground. Ever since the beginning of Doodle's existence Brother planned to kill him. The story proves this when Brother says "I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow". Brother felt embarrassment toward Doodle because he didn't like the idea of having an invalid brother that could never play with him and do activities that other children his age would do for fun. When Brother had the chance to leave Doodle behind he did it because his cruelty against Doodle began to rise and he didn't want to see Doodle in that
