Bridget Jones’s Diary I chose the Pride and Prejudice adaptation, Bridget Jones’s Diary. It is a novel written by Helen Fielding. This novel guides the readers through one year of Bridget Jones’s life while she is living in London. This novel was published in 1996 and later made into a film which we watched in class. I chose this adaptation because I have seen the film version many times and I loved it. I thought this would be the perfect time to read the book, as I am enrolled in this course and reading and watching many different Pride and Prejudice adaptations, I enjoyed reading this more modern adaptation and looking into Bridget’s life and comparing her life and story to those characters in the original version of Pride and Prejudice. Adaptations occur all the time and since being in this class I have experienced most of the different ways this story can be conveyed to the readers or watchers.

I believe it was also made for people who were fans of “chick lit” or were familiar with Pride and Prejudice. I believe it was very popular at the time to have stories that brought up love, feminism and the working women. This adaptation worked because it was relatable to the readers and even if they have not gone through something like Bridget they could connect it to their life somehow. I think that it worked because of the diary like set up which made it an easy and quick read and it was full of comedy and it was enjoyable to read. As previously mentioned, I think this adaptation did well because it was released around the same time as the BBC Pride and Prejudice. The growing popularity of that show made people want to read Pride and Prejudice and other adaptations. I feel that happened when the 2005 version came out to theaters. I remember my cousin reading Pride and Prejudice when it came out. That also happened when the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies film came

Elizabeth and Edna’s attributes; rather, the differences that result from their juxtaposition with the protagonists also advances the issues that women faced in the 19th century. In Pride and Prejudice, Charlotte’s desire to marry anyone regardless of her feelings, as opposed to Elizabeth’s uncompromising pursuit of true love, points out women’s dependence on marriage for their wellbeing. Charlotte’s predicament is but a representation of how women at the time were effectively bound by the only option they had. In the same manner, Adele’s blind obedience to social dictates, as opposed to Edna’s rejection of gender roles, emphasizes the limitations imposed by women. These two novels depict two different aspects of the same overarching issue: women’s dependence and submission to the power of men.
There are numerous reasons why I enjoyed this novel. First of all, the novel is a very connectable story. The characters in the story are easy to connect to. ...ews of these ideologies. While Elizabeth does accept many of the norms of the period she also challenges the purpose for marriage and has an outspoken mind. Her confident personality doesn’t allow the fact that she has less wealth than many others and is constantly being scorned at to interfere with her happiness. She doesn’t permit the social expectations of her times to hinder her strong beliefs and fate in life. Pride and Prejudice is so vastly different to most other novels during the early 19th century that Jane Austen must have held some very alternative views. The heroine Elizabeth challenges the most social expectations of that time and she ends up the happiest of all the characters. This theme must have opened Romantic readers minds, perhaps to the way society should be and this I believe is why this novel is one of the great classics of English literature.
The opening chapter briefly introduces the Bennets and Mrs Bennet’s concern to make sure all her daughters are married. Although only Mr Bennet and Mrs Bennet is present, the reader also finds out about the sisters as well. From just this short chapter, immediately, the protagonists in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ are obviously, Elizabeth, Jane and Bingley. In conclusion, the first chapter is very important and definitely introduces the reader to the central characters and concerns of the novel.

Oppression, specifically female oppression, shows up through Elizabeth’s fight against it, the Bennet family’s struggles to maintain status in a society in which people are segregated by class, as well as the roles and standards set forward by society for women to follow accordingly. In any case, oppression poses a decision to the person facing it: to follow or not to follow? Whichever path a person chooses to follow can affect them for their entire life, either negatively or positively. In Pride and Prejudice, the reader gets to see oppression in many different ways, and is allowed to gain insight through the character’s opinions and statements.

Through the use of conservative characters that were socially accepted in England during this time, Austen provides the reader with necessary details that show how insane these people were.
Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, is a remarkable story showing the complications between men and women before and during their time of falling in love. The plot is based on how the main characters, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, escape their pride, prejudice and vanity to find each other; however, both must recognize their faults and change them. Jane Austen follows the development of Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s relationship in how they both change in order to overcome their own vanities and be able to love each other. Mr. Darcy is a very proud and vain man. Darcy’s pride occurs because his family allows him to follow his principles “in pride and conceit” (Austen 310).
One might find themselves swept away into a world of romance, excitement and refinement, as well as several other illustrations of the 17th century. The storyline is only the beginning of the great elements in this movie; the scenery alone makes it well worth the time invested. The elegance, lifestyle, and romance are what make Pride and Prejudice the movie that it is today. This movie portrays, in an ideal manner, what it would have been like to live in that culture in an ideal manner. Pride and Prejudice is written in 3rd person omniscient, which allows the reader to delve into the minds of more than one character. The narrator can be persuasive and influential, (this is most common during passages of large summary) although at other times a ‘silent observer’/goes without commentary, (During character dialogue) however the ‘point of view’ becomes more focused through the character of Elizabeth. The narrator has control of selection of detail, and chooses what the reader is entitled to see. (Eg selects the incidents we see, and finds the words to describe them.)
There are many examples throughout the novel, to support the running theme, and title of the novel, Pride and Prejudice. Pride in not always a good thing, it can lead to arrogance and contempt very quickly. Prejudice is not necessarily a bad thing either, and is never unavoidable, sometimes disliking a person and not being friends with them works out to an advantage. Jane Austen dramatized the theme of pride and prejudice, through plot, her main characters, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, and demonstrated how the status of women and social status can lead to pride and prejudice.

...e storyline and characters well, the decision to use Pride and Prejudice, backed by more fundamental and meaningful examples was an excellent one. Mary, one of the younger Bennet daughters explains early in the novel that "vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us" (pg 19). By the end of the novel, Elizabeth learns that having these prejudices against Darcy for one simple character trait, vanity (in which she ironically contained herself) was wrong, especially since it wasn't based on firsthand experience. Through Elizabeth, Austen conveys the message of how first impressions and judgments can quickly form false prejudices and uses the title, Pride and Prejudice to support this message.
