Bridget Jones’s Diary I chose the Pride and Prejudice adaptation, Bridget Jones’s Diary. It is a novel written by Helen Fielding. This novel guides the readers through one year of Bridget Jones’s life while she is living in London. This novel was published in 1996 and later made into a film which we watched in class. I chose this adaptation because I have seen the film version many times and I loved it. I thought this would be the perfect time to read the book, as I am enrolled in this course and reading and watching many different Pride and Prejudice adaptations, I enjoyed reading this more modern adaptation and looking into Bridget’s life and comparing her life and story to those characters in the original version of Pride and Prejudice. I believe it was also made for people who were fans of “chick lit” or were familiar with Pride and Prejudice. I believe it was very popular at the time to have stories that brought up love, feminism and the working women. This adaptation worked because it was relatable to the readers and even if they have not gone through something like Bridget they could connect it to their life somehow. I think that it worked because of the diary like set up which made it an easy and quick read and it was full of comedy and it was enjoyable to read. As previously mentioned, I think this adaptation did well because it was released around the same time as the BBC Pride and Prejudice. The growing popularity of that show made people want to read Pride and Prejudice and other adaptations. I feel that happened when the 2005 version came out to theaters. I remember my cousin reading Pride and Prejudice when it came out. That also happened when the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies film came
