Dog Discrimination

BSL stands for “Breed-Specific Legislation”, and the only problem with this is that it bases its reasoning off of the looks of the animal (Kray 1). Legislation is beginning to be passed in different parts of the world, that discriminates dogs just because of their looks. There are many different opinions about this and its effectiveness. The main reason that cities and states pass this law is because there are often multiple cases of dog attacks, and BSL is supposed to improve public safety. Consequently, there are proven facts and instances where BSL has actually not done anything at all but kill and outlaw a breed of dog. When BSL is enforced, great dog owners are forced to give up their dogs, which are put into homeless shelters or put down. Today in Montreal, BSL has been passed and there are many organizations that are looking for people to adopt Pit Bull type dogs so that they are not euthanized (CBC 1). In Canada, there are veterinarians who disagree with BSl and refuse to euthanize the dogs who are affected by this legislation (Tremayne 1). Adam Goldfrab once said, “Pet owners look to veterinarians as a resource, but when it comes to banning a breed, the veterinary opinion is trumped by inaccurate statistics and mob mentality hysteria” (Goldfrab 2). Also, there are many different animal holding agencies who are threatening to revoke their agreement with the city of Montreal if the legislation is passed. This would be a major problem for the city because if this happens then homeless dogs will have nowhere to go and then the city would have to resort to a different method of putting the dogs somewhere. Many people who are apart of the general public having mixed feelings about this, so much that there has been protests in the center of the city. Today, if you own a Pitbull and take it out in public for a walk, you automatically can see what the media has done to people’s belief about them. There are numerous outlets for people to obtain news about what is going on in the world, but most of the time these outlets like to stretch or twist the truth. As for the news pertaining to BSL, you can see a trend of how the different networks like to leave out parts of the full story. Humans are quick to jump to conclusions and to blame their actions on others when the situation is not good. People need to realize that it's not always the dogs fault, people like to have pit bulls as aggressive guard dogs because of their appearance and the reputation that has formed about them. It cannot be stressed enough that no dog is born mean they are made mean. That is why the different alternatives to BSL can actually fix more situations than just the main one. This legislation has many factors that appeal to ethos, pathos, and logos, and they are specifically a main reason to why BSL should be outlawed. Ethically, BSL serves no purpose but blaming a dog breed for humans actions and trying to pin their wrong doings on an animal that doesn’t know any better.
