1984 or Brave New World
The current world is constantly changing and progressing. 1984 and Brave New World both depict dystopian societies. In the present, society is headed towards a society that is a combination of 1984 and Brave New World. The world is headed towards a combination of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and 1984 by George Orwell because of the world’s technology, drugs, and torture. In present day, there is surveillance everywhere. Currently, there is estimated to be 30 million surveillance cameras in America (Vlahos). Surveillance cameras can be found in banks, stores, schools, prisons, and businesses. They follow people like a dog follows its owner. In 1984, there are telescreens that monitor the citizens of Oceania. The government uses the telescreens so that, “Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard”(Orwell 5). In World State, “…a bokanovskified egg will bud, will proliferate, will divide” (Huxley 7). This lets World State create ninety-six people at one time instead of just one. Scientists have not been able to clone a human yet, but they have cloned a sheep named Dolly who was cloned after 277 attempts (“Cloning Dolly the Sheep”). Unfortunately, Dolly died soon after being cloned. Cloning humans will probably be possible in the future after science has advanced. Scientists will first have to gain the trust of humans in order to convince them that it is safe and humane, since 81% of American adults believe that the idea of cloning humans is immoral (“Americans oppose”). They will, also, need to find a way to make sure the clone lives a typical lifespan.
