The United States of America is one of the most prosperous, looked up to countries in the world. Therefore, thousands of people across the world make the sometimes-dangerous attempt of getting here in hopes to live their own version of the American Dream. What makes America a country worth risking one’s life? There are four key points that are the infrastructure of the American Dream. These four pillars are Freedom, Private Property, Limited Government, and Capitalism. With these four components of the dream the results are endless. The book When We Are Free written by Timothy G. Nash, Dale C. Matcheck, and Richard M. Ebeling, helps us understand these four topics. These gentlemen did this by filling the book with short stories that allow the …show more content…

It also shows what can jeopardize the sought-after dream. Freedom can be defined in many ways, but a definition is nothing but a vague description. Freedom simply cannot be described in a few brief sentences but rather by actions. Freedom allows Americans and outsiders, wishing to achieve the American Dream, the opportunity to do so. Freedom is shown in multiple chapters throughout When We Are Free. One chapter that stood out the most, proving that we are free to do as we wish, if it complies with laws is called, A Human Action Taxonomy, written by Dale M. Haywood. This chapter discusses that as free humans, we have certain choices we can make to remain free. The choices are whether to give up some freedoms for benefits. This means is that by giving up actions such as murder and by paying taxes, the government will protect us. As free humans, we can also choose different paths instead of being forced to do what the public believes is right. This power was granted to us by our founding fathers. They did this because based on the world’s history as we know it, governments that are too powerful fail their people. We cannot live out the dream without a country. The chapter The Fall of Rome and Modern Parallels written by Lawrence W. Reed, brings us back in time to one of the most powerful empires recorded in history. The Roman Empire was a powerful, wealthy state ages ago. Rome was enjoying the fruits of its labors until the government became too powerful. Some may say this is happening in America. When the government becomes too powerful, ordinary people lose the will to achieve greatness. There people started living off the government, and with that Rome’s government began to lose their money. This is what led to the fall of the Roman Empire. A famous quote by George Santayana is “Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it” (Santayana, Nd). I fear this for Americans, because the new generation, myself included, have been brought up in a society that makes everyone feel like a winner. This makes young adults lazy, and not care about being the best they can be. The welfare system is abused by many because people are becoming lazy.
