The book The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell is about the moment when a product, behavior, or idea spreads throughout the world. In writing this, Malcolm Gladwell was trying to help people understand how something can go from not being popular to being the latest fad, how crime rates in New York suddenly dropped lower than ever in the 1990s, and why William Dawes wasn’t nearly as successful as Paul Revere. Teaching people how the tipping point is achieved was the primary message of The Tipping Point. In Gladwell’s study of this concept, he found that the people who started the television show Sesame Street had one idea in mind which was to increase childhood literacy. They did everything that they knew how to make letters and words interest the children enough to learn them. According to Gladwell, the producers accomplished their task to some extent. They helped children learn to read in a fun and entertaining way. Gladwell discovered that people can make things stick with us in very subtle ways. One person put a picture of a gold box in the corner of a coupon and told others that if they could find the gold box, they could get the product for free. This method helped the people selling the product get a bigger gain than they had been without it. The stickiness factor contributes to the tipping point by helping people take action based on the information they gain rather than doing nothing about it. Gladwell also uses other examples to further explain the importance of the stickiness factor and how it leads to tipping
