Recommended: Banning books
“While the debate over book banning continues to divide Americans, perhaps one thing everyone can agree upon is that books are powerful, often provocative, and may even change the way we think” (Text 1). Books continue to be questioned by people as to whether they should be banned due to being sexually explicit, having offensive language, and so many other reasons. Some may see it fit to ban a specific book, whereas others do not agree with the banning of a book. It is for this reason that there is contradictions between the banning of books today. There are a few different reasons as to why books should not be banned. People tend to use their First Amendment right, the right to freedom of expression, to its fullest. However, the banning of books severely limits this right. It states, “ In the United States, public school libraries enjoy significant First Amendment protections because of the Pico decision, a 1982 Supreme Court ruling that the First Amendment protests not only the freedom to express ideas, but also the …show more content…
A text states, This time federal judge John Woolsey decided that the novel did not violate obscenity law, as it was written with genuine artistry and would not lead a normal adult reader to depravity” (Text 1). If the book Ulysses by James Joyce was banned, then so many people would have been deprived of this author’s creativity. It is found in the same text, “Moreover, the statement reads, ‘Every silencing of a heresy, every enforcement of an orthodoxy, diminishes the toughness and resilience of our society and leaves it the less able to deal with controversy and difference’” (Text 1). When a book is banned from the public, then the people around become more dumb. By being more dumb, it is meant that those people are less prepared for the differences they will come across, and therefore, are also less open minded. Books are an outlet of creativity and understanding and should not be

Why are books challenged and further on banned? To challenge a book is an attempt to remove the material from schools and/or libraries, and to ban a book is to successfully remove the material from these places. Books are usually challenged to protect children from the censors of these books. This book was banned for all the wrong reasons. This paper will focus on racism, sexism, homosexuality, and violence since these were reasons the book got banned which on the contrary should have given it much more motive to let high school students read and learn from it.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.”-Dr. Seuss. What Dr. Seuss’s statement is telling us is that books have given us knowledge about ideas, life, and the world. One of the greatest inventions of mankind is a book. A book is a set of printed sheets that are put together fill with information that people read about. Books have been around with us since ages from generations to generations. It is all around the world with different cultures and languages, books have given people the joy of story, information, and knowledge. Everyone should have the right to read whatever book they are seem interested. Well, it is not the case; there are some people out there trying to challenge books from being ban. It is ridiculous that books are being taken away from readers. Today, books are still currently being challenged or banned. This type of doing is censorship. This is a problem that people need to look at and think about. Books are in school, library, in our homes yet they are too much for the people. Why are books so sensitive for readers to be challenged? There are two set of sides to this issue, one side are the people that wants to remove the books and challenged them to be ban, the other side are the one that oppose the banning of books, allowing to read whatever they want. Which side is right? This leads to the question as to why books are currently being challenged or banned. How does banning books relate to censorship and what are some solutions that can solve the problem of banning books?
People ban or challenge books because they don't want other to read them because of their content, even thought we see most of it in our everyday life. To stop book banning and to keep books on the shelves; if a book has inappropriate content and someone wants to buy it or get it from the library or store they have to get the parents consent. This will also keep parents informed on what their child is reading.
Every year in the United States we have books being banned and challenged by many people who do not like the contents of books. When researching for this argument essay I found an article written by Rebecca Hagelin. Rebecca Hagelin is the author of Home Invasion: Protecting Your Family in a Culture That’s Gone Stark Raving Mad and the vice president of communications and marketing at the Heritage Foundation (Lankford).
(Goldberg, par. 3). Every year on the last week of September there is the National Banned Books Week. It is an exciting time where there are special readings of banned books. It is also the times where the newspaper prints off the threats from the American Library Association to have the freedom to read. Last year on Banned Books week the ALA’s official magazine, American Libraries, ran a story headlined, “Book banning alive and well in the U.S.” What do books from the Twilight series, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Hunger Games have in common? They all have faced removal from library bookshelves in the United States within the past year. It is understandable why the Twilight series have been banned, because of the romance and make believe characters. Some parents caution their children who might read them and get their heads glued to the possibility of having a romance like that in the future. The reason of To Kill a Mockingbird being banned is racism and violence. It is a simply written book that many Junior High students can read, but only in high school are they able to read it. The popular Hunger Games series was banned form the graphic violence and it gave some kids nightmares. ( Piesyk, Par. 1) Some parent believes that violent books are the cause of all the violence that is happening in the world at this moment. With the parents complaining about the books that are available to the students, their words are what bring t...
Should our books be banned Many books are banned and some are banned for better reasons than others. Many books have been banned for many different reasons. Some books are banned for better reasons than others. A lot of books are banned that should be okay to read publicly.

The quote is important because is important because it is withholding knowledge does withhold the future. It is so important to make sure that the future is successful and by hold books back it can damage that. “With book banning as a fundamental procedure in the American high school, a developing generation can be systematically molded by those who come before them,”(“The Negative Effects of Book Banning Regarding High School Students”).

Banned for good or for bad? 11,300 books have been banned since 1982. Books banned for language or explicit content should not be banned from everyone. Banned books could be for the better. If you don't like a book don't read it, but don't take the privilege away from others.
However, what is inappropriate to some people is appropriate to others. More than one viewpoint on a book is necessary before the decision to ban it. Parents might be looking for age-appropriate reading material for their child but when looking for that material, it led to the censorship of books. In the article, “Literary Censorship in Schools Impedes Progress”, author Adriana Lopez states, “Censorship in middle schools, high schools, and colleges also seems unnecessary because students are going to experiment and explore their individuality and the world around them regardless of what their parents or school believe.” If the ALA is trying to protect students from inappropriate material, they shouldn’t allow it in libraries in the first
The result, however; is always and ever the denial of another's right to read. The censors are mostly parents and other community residents of all backgrounds, political and religious beliefs, who are sincerely concerned about the reading habits of today’s children. The situation leads to the personal standard of what one parent or small groups of parents, being mistaken for a community standard. A minority ends up dictating the silent majority. That goes against all of America’s basic freedoms.
This is why I feel books should not be banned in any way. Today, I will be discussing with you why and who ban books and I am going to tell you why books should not be banned and how it is unconstitutional. Many teachers in America want students to read books for the use of education, but many parents disagree and want the books out of schools for good.. Parents want these certain books to be banned because they want their children to avoid the profanity, racial remarks, sexual content and the things that go against their religious beliefs.
Books should not be banned because the reader should have the option to choose if they want to read a certain book, books are banned for unnecessary reasons, and libraries need more books. One reason books should not be banned is because
