Bonsai trees are on the oldest art forms. Bonsai is the ancient art of the Chinese. The word bonsai is Chinese for a tree that has been dwarfed. The art of bonsai is actually dwarfing a tree or making it small. This means to make it a full grown tree just really small. The art of bonsai has been around for thousands of years. It first came around as a simple art known as Pun-Sai this was just early specimens in pots.(www.bonsaisite.com/history1.html) The Chinese based their shaping of the trees on Dragons and serpents. The Japanese then started their own form of Bonsai during the Kamakura period (1185 1333). (www.bonsaisite.com/history1.html)
The history Bonsai is a long and ancient one. The Chinese actually started the first type of bonsai called Pun-Sai. This form was created during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.) Bonsai, according to legend, was started by the emperor of China. In his courtyard he made a miniature version of his entire empire. This miniature version was complete with hills, valleys, rivers, lakes and trees. (www.celestialbonsai.com/history.html) If the legend is true this would be the first form of bonsai. However in this Courtyard the trees were relatively big. Unlike the later form of Bonsai with really dwarfed trees. The trees used here were just stunted or were naturally small. In the form of Bonsai today the trees are dwarfed and kept in pots. It took a long time to develop because the emperor wanted it for himself. He stated that any found with the miniature landscapes would be put to death because they were a threat to the empire.

...highly prized today. Chinese bonsai come from the landscape of images of fiery dragons and coiled serpents; this takes far greater precedence over natural beauty unlike the Japanese. The Japanese focus on using native species for their bonsai namely pines, azaleas and maples (regarded as the traditional bonsai plants). In other countries, people are more open to opinion, even perennial herbs and common weeds are grown as summer bonsai. It is generally accepted that most bonsai are trees or shrubs. In this paper I will discuss the print called Plum Garden at Kameido. This print was created by Ando Hiroshige in 1857. It is a woodblock print. In the front of the print is a close up of a tree. It is an image of a plum tree in a plum garden. The tree has pretty white blooms on it. For this reason it is logical to assume that it must be springtime. Working back, I see two more plum trees. None of the trees have much detail of the bark texture. I can see that if these trees are true to life, Plum trees are not very shapely trees. Behind the second row of trees is what appears to be an iron fence with people standing at various points along the fence. The fence line angles back to show a third row of trees in the distance. Green grass can be seen in much of the fenced in area highlighting the fact that it is a garden.
Symbolism plays a key role in the novella in allowing the author to relay his political ideals. In The King of Trees, Cheng uses many elements of nature to represent both revolutionary and counter-revolutionary ideas. The king of trees - and trees in general - throughout the novella is a symbol of counter-revolutionary ideals, and the older Chinese customs. Li Li, and in turn, the followers of Mao Zedong/the Red Guard, believe that “In practical terms, old things must be destroyed” (Cheng 43). This is shown through the felling of the trees – getting rid of the Old Chinese cus...
Ikebana is a Japanese tradition of flower arranging that was brought to Japan in the 6th century and was a part of Buddhist custom introduced to the Japanese. The origin of flower arranging in Japan is from the early use of flowers as an offering to the spirits and the dead. Buddhist priests and members of the temple practiced most of the early Ikebana flower arrangement. Through the years, the Japanese adopted the custom and built schools specifically for flower arranging courses and one that dates back 500 years ago was Ikenobo. Ikenobo is known to be the oldest sc...
Qin Shi Haung Di was the first emperor of the Qin Empire in China during the 3rd century BCE. Born in 261 BCE, Haung inherited the throne from his father at the early age of 13 and showcased his ambitious spirit by unifying China and creating his empire (Swart 1984). While he is known mostly for building the Great Wall of China, he also left quite a legacy when it comes to his elaborate burial grounds. In 246 BCE, thirty-six years before his death in 210 BCE, Emperor Qin started planning the construction of his extravagant final resting place (Swart 1984). The Emperor’s mausoleum was essentially a small, underground city showcasing Qin’s power and influence using different artistic mediums.

To what extent do the belief systems in The King of Trees act as a means of enforcing societal norms?
Maple trees first originated in China or Japan, and expand into about 100 species. " Of the four North American species good for sugaring, the hard or rock maple, Acer Saccharum, produces sap of greater quality and in greater quantity than the others and accounts for most of the syrup produced today." (On Food and Cooking, pg. 383).
...assistance. The man instructed him to make small dumplings, or Tāngyuán (湯圓), for the God of Fire. Also, he told him to tell the people to hang up lanterns and light firecrackers. The emperor obeyed the man’s commands and the city was saved. While the people were admiring the decorations in the city, Yuánxiāo was finally reunited with her family. During the Lantern Festival, the Chinese people enjoy eating Tāngyuán (汤圆). Tāngyuán are small, sticky dumplings filled on the inside with sweet stuffing. Eating these dumplings represent family unity and togetherness. After eating, the people enjoy the craft of making large, elaborate lanterns from colored paper. They enjoy watching the beautiful lanterns in the night along with the full moon. Another popular activity involves guessing lantern riddles. These riddles have messages that indicate good fortune and prosperity.

Wood species can be divided into two groups: hardwood and softwood. Softwoods are gymnosperm trees, while hardwoods are angiosperm trees. (Stenius 2000). The composition and structure of wood are a masterpiece of evolutionary design, which enable trees to grow tall and live for many years. The wood structure also enables the trees to survive for strong natural forces such as wind and gravity and the structure even provides for an efficient transport of water from the roots to the crown. Wood is a complex biocomposite built up of cells whose own building blocks, the wood polymers and their ideal composition, give rise to a superior weight-to-strength ratio for the wood material. Wood is essentially composed of cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, and extractives. Each of these components contributes to fiber properties, which ultimately impact product properties. In different wood species, however, their relative composition varies greatly, and also the chemical composition of wood varies quantitatively among tree species. According to the results, the lignin content and functional group were determined separately. In addition, the chemical structure was not similar between softwood and hardwood. Lignin is one of the important chemical constituents of lignocellulosic materials in wood and it is one of the most abundant biopolymers in nature. The physical
China is a country full of ancient customs and traditions. The native people are very proud of these customs and traditions. To many of us hearing the word ‘China’ we conjure up thoughts of origami, dragons, pandas, and their distinctive script’ all of which are traditional to china, but it goes a lot deeper than that.
Pottery fragments were discovered in Yamamoto between 15 and 16 thousand years ago. These are the oldest pieces of pottery found so far. During the early development of Japanese art, chinese styles greatly influenced painters and styles. But by the 14th century japan as a country had started to develop its own style, and by the 16th century japan had completely developed its own style due to the fact6 japan as the country had shut itself to the world. One of the main differences in style between Chinese and Japanese art styles in that Japanese painters uses more abstract and naturalistic styles. With the focus more on capturing the basic form and characteristics of specific subjects. They worked on paring down to the essentials unlike
