Shakespeare's tragedy Othello explores how an individual's blind trust in another can lead to their insecurities exploited and in sight their impulsive behaviour. Act 3 Scene 3, is the pivotal point and climax of the play, where Othello’s irrationality leads him to trust in Iago's absolute, yet false loyalty in his disclosure of Desdemona's betrayal. The audience sees the destructive power of blind trust and desire for control, through Iago’s manipulation of the tragic hero’s insecurities. The complexity of the human condition is revealed through emotions that do not simply exist exclusively but are formed through the character's interactions in the play. Contrastingly, Shakespeare keeps Othello at a distance, denying the tragic protagonist the profound rapport with the audience. Iago's use of blank verse portrays him as more sincere, as he manipulates his phrases to suggest that behind his simple questions and answers are insinuations that affect Othello's thoughts. In the lines:
"O, beware, my lord, of jealousy.
It is the green-eyes monster, which doth mock
The meat it feeds on."
The fact that the word 'jealousy' is at the end of the line makes the impact felt more acutely as the word hovers, to enact a reaction out of Othello further inducing him to succumb to his emotions. Iago is also able to use silence effectively, deliberately introducing ‘stops’ throughout the scene to infuriate and intrigue Othello. By appearing reluctant to talk, he prompts Othello's thoughts to dwell causing him to think irrationally and act impulsively as well as portrays him as trustful and loyal person. Seen in the lines
