In the vast fictional universe of Marvel Comics, T’Challa, better known as Black Panther, is not only king of Wakanda, he’s also the richest superhero of them all. And although today’s fight for the title of wealthiest person alive involves a tug-of-war between billionaire CEOs, the wealthiest person in history, Mansa Musa, has more in common with Marvel’s first black superhero. Musa became the tenth Mansa or sultan of the Mali Empire in 1312. During his reign, Mali may have been the largest producer of gold in the world. In this epoch of monetary hunger, when it comes to defining success, I think the vast majority of the metropolitan population would see eye-to-eye when they exclaim that wealth is the best yardstick of success. However, this is true only to some extent. It is not wrong when we say possession of wealth does vouch for hard work, sacrifice and time, in line with the values of modern-day culture. Setting our aim in life to accumulate huge stacks of cash and assets, and then earning it would be synonymous with the definition of success given by the Cambridge Dictionary: “achieving of the results wanted or hoped for.” The keyword from the previous sentence is ‘earning it’. The reason is that if someone procures millions by winning the lottery, the goal may have been achieved but the journey of success would not have been ‘earned’. My point: a successful person is someone who has strived for his goal and ultimately earned it due to his focused pursuit. In the likes of Steve Jobs, Mahatma Gandhi, Malala Yousafzai and Bob Marley, their journeys and values might have been poles apart, but what they had in common was their attitude towards success. It is the blazing passion that burnt like a powerhouse within their soul, that made their daily routine so meaningful and fruitful, and which they practiced whole-heartedly every single day. When a successful person arises at the break of dawn, he only sees endless possibilities and is motivated to make a change instead of submitting to the whims of so-called ‘destiny’. Personalities like Gandhi and Malala made changes which seemed incomprehensible, while Jobs and Marley made contributions like no other to their fields which shook the world. You see my friend, the age-old saying, ‘Love is the most powerful thing’, might be true after all when we witness how any successful person has and will continue to shape ‘their’ world with their utmost love in whichever field they
