Birth Order

There are many factors that contribute to who we are. Birth Order is a strongly suggested theory that says, the order of children influences the traits that makes them who they are and who they will be, in relation to their siblings. Another factor that psychologists have taken into consideration is, the parents’ birth order. I am the oldest of my siblings and I fall under many of the traits that psychologists suggest the firstborn would have. According to Alfred Adler, the actions and personalities of children seems to have quite a bit to do with birth order, along with their environment and how their parents raise them. There were a few traits that stuck out to me that I could relate too. The first one is caution. I have never been one to shoot my hand into the air and volunteer for a random act that I did not know about in advance. If something is expected of me and the directions aren’t clear, when they are made clear it is too short notice, therefore I get more stressed out. In high school I would not have called myself a high achiever by any means. I had average grades and didn’t go out of my way to study all the time for my classes. My mom always said I got through some classes by “the skin of my teeth.” However, I am going to school to get my bachelors in nursing and the article specifically said how first children typically were in the medical field. For the longest time I was set on going into dental hygiene. I wanted to work in a dentist office or in orthodontics but I have decided to take a different route. Even though I have switched my major, both dental hygiene and nursing are in the medical field. I am pushing to get the best grades I can in college by studying more and making sure I understand the concepts.
