Biomedical Engineering is a very broad field, and one can do anything with this major. I chose it because it would make me a diverse adult for my future career. I knew deep down that I always wanted to be a doctor, but it took me going out on my first co-op to truly understand and set that goal. I worked at CSL Behring, a pharmaceutical company that works on clinical trials. I met a few people who wanted to become doctors and regret their choice of not sticking with it and I didn’t want that to be me, so I finally declared myself as a pre-med student. The reason I didn’t go straight into pre-med was because I didn’t know if it was a fit for me. My long-term goal is to become a medical geneticist and work with children or adults on hereditary diseases and during this, do cancer research on the side. I have always been interested in DNA and how genes work, and I know how it feels to worry about diseases or medical problems that run in a family. I want to work with cancer, because it is close to my heart now, and I want to join the fight against cancer. Personally, I believe that cancer has a strong tie to genetics, and this medical profession will help me find out if this is true. Short term, I would like to finish my degree and have a successful college career. I am the first one of my family to attend college, and I want to set a memorable mark in my family and be a great role model for my younger cousins. These goals that I have set in place will allow me to work on bettering our society. With an education, I will be another person in society with a higher education degree, which is always helpful to our society. I also will be working in medicine and medical research. This will allow me to work on new treatments for diseases that will allow the mortality rate in the United States to extend. I love serving the community and helping out others; each semester I commit 150 hours of service to help out others through the PSC Bonner
