Zora Neale Hurston was born on January 15, 1891, in Notasulga, Alabama. She lives most of her life studying anthropology and writing novels. She moved around a lot because of a few family issues. She was a very important part of the Harlem renaissance. Which was a cultural movement that spanned the 1920s; also known as the “New Negro Movement.” She was also a part of The Great Migration. The Great Migration was the movement of six million African Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West. Overall, Zora led a great life and was a good role model to many people.
Zora Neale Hurston was the daughter of John and Lucy Hurston. Her father was a carpenter and a Baptist preacher. Her mother Lucy was a former school teacher. Zora was the fifth out of eight children in her family. She was born on January 15, 1891, but not many people actually knew her real birthday. This is because she lied about her age. Although they had a big family, they were not really a poor family. They lived on five acres of land and had a large house that held eight rooms. They always had plenty of food to eat as well. (Reuben) On September 18, 1904, Zora’s mother passed away. She was absolutely heartbroken by this. A few years later, her father remarried. Zora did not get along with her, nor did she like her, thus the great amount of arguments they had. A part of the reason why Zora probably did not like her new stepmother, was because when her father remarried he started spending less and less time with his children, and even found himself having less money for them as well. She died in the St. Lucie county Welfare Home. She died of “hypertensive heart disease.” She was later buried in an unmarked grave in the Garden of Heavenly Rest, in Fort Pierce.
As you can see, Zora Neale Hurston led a long beautiful life. She was very educated. She filled the world with all of her beautiful work, whether it was her books or her plays. She was a part of a cultural movement- the Harlem Renaissance, and met a lot of great artists. Her career as an anthropologist and a writer lasted over thirty years. She proved to many people that it did not matter what color her skin was, or what sex she was; that she could prove the world wrong and do what she loved to do best.
