Billy didn’t realize what is happening because, when he met the landlady, she was a kind and innocent old woman. Billy didn't realize what going to happen to him because, he thought an old woman like her wouldn't be up to something like this. When she welcomes him into her home, she greeted kindly and with a warm smile. When Dahl writes; "She seemed terribly nice. She looked exactly like the mother of one’s best school friend welcoming one into the house to stay for the Christmas holidays.” This would make him think that the Landlady is a sweet and a gentle old woman that’s not up to any mischief. In addition to this, the Landlady said “But I’m always ready. Everything is always ready day and night in this house just on the off-chance that an acceptable young gentleman will come along. And it is such a pleasure, my dear, such a very great pleasure when now and again, I open the door and I see someone standing there who is just exactly right.” This would mean that the Landlady is giving Billy everything he wants by having everything always ready for him, the cost to stay there is just five and six pences a night and have a few rules.
