Sitting with my daughter, rummaging through old photographs, I hear her suddenly start to laugh, saying “Mom what were you thinking?” I look over at the picture she held in her hand; it was my homecoming picture. This image was of me at the age of fifteen standing next to my date smiling as if we were the king and queen of the homecoming. Then I noticed why she laughed. It was neither the smile nor the dress, but it was the hair! Yes, I sported the “big hair” of the 80’s and my date equally followed suit. I am not sure whose hair was bigger mine or his. Smiling and remembering those days I told her that this was the fad at the time. Big hair in the 80’s required more volume and products to get results. The big hair fad was different in the 80’s than, say the beehive or bouffant style found in the 50’s and 60’s. Beehive and bouffant styles were delicate styles with smooth lines and structure or form. The 1980’s had a variety of styles to choose from. Ranging from big bangs, feathered/crimped hair, frizzy hair, spiked hair, mullets or Mohawks, colored and hair with perms, you never had a shortage …show more content…

Taking inventory of the hair care products I had on hand, I felt confident that I was ready to begin. Exactly what you need depends on your hair type. Natural curly hair needs fewer products than straight hair. Either way you will need some essentials like hair spray (a lot of this), mousse or gel, glitter, and depending on your preference maybe some color. Any products not on hand can simply be bought at your supermarket. No need to purchase anything expensive because you will go through so much of it. There is no need to waste money when it will all be washed out the next day only to start again. After that the tools necessary to create my look were needed. Curly irons, combs, brushes, glitter, color (if desired) and a blow dryer. Since I was a kid of the 80’s I definitely had these tools on
