In the novel Big Fish by Daniel Wallace, we are told the story of Edward Bloom, a man of many adventures, who is somewhat of a myth. Big Fish is a collection of the tall tales Edward tells his son about his life, and also of the effect his tales had on his son. The novel comes from an American author from Alabama, while the movie comes from Hollywood and is directed by Tim Burton, who is also American. This story is not an ancient sacred text, so the story’s function(s) is to entertain and to make money.
A hero is defined by Joseph Campbell as someone who gives their life to something bigger than themselves. Edward is a willing hero. “ He was a big fish”(Big Fish Wallace page 12). Edward was meant for great things and was well aware of that.

This one simple statement brings Edward’s greater goal back home to his son. This is why his call to adventure is Will’s birth even though Edward believes his adventure started long before. The film begins with Will’s wedding and Edward is telling the story of Will’s birth. This is different from the novel but really helps with the monomyth chronology. In the film Karl the giant is Edward’s first helper. Karl is who Edward leaves Ashton with and helps Edward meet his wife. This however is out of order because Edward meets Karl long before his son is born. In the novel Edward doesn’t really have a helper because Karl doesn’t serve the same purpose. Edward takes many tests, and everytime he makes it out alive he passes. This, like most of the parts of this hero quest, happen before his son is born. The boon is Edward’s stories and his adventures. It’s the things that his relationship with his son are built off of. In the movie, Will constantly complains that he doesn’t know his father because Edward has never told him a fact about himself. At the end of the film, Will realises that his father’s stories were who he was, and he knew Edward all along. In the
With giant in time the idea is that the historical figures in this case Edward, are greatly modified to make them seem larger than life.In the movie his father also tells him, he makes himself a hero and more than the orginary man. Larger than life, a giant in every story and reimaging of his life. All the things that happen in Edward’s life is told to make him seem a lot more interesting. Though all the misadventures that Edward goes through life, is massively exaggerated and altered to make him look much more likeable and interesting as a character. This is far from the truth and is the main problem with the movie story line.Will, Edward’s son wants to know who is father truly is behind the stories and myths that his father use to tell him as a child and uncover what this giant is really like before his time is out. I will tell how the Call of the Wild book is different than the movie and how the movie is different than the book.As well as contrasting I will also compare them. The movie was extremely different than the book. There were so many different things, I can't explain, but I am. The movie and the book were opposite in some parts.There were so many same things too.

In Daniel Wallace’s novel, Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions and Tim Burton’s film, Big Fish, the relationship between the dying protagonist, Edward Bloom and his estranged son, William Bloom, is centrally to the story in both the novel and film. Like many fathers in today's society, Edward Bloom wishes to leave his son with something to remember him by after he is dead. It is for this reason the many adventures of Edward Bloom are deeply interwoven into the core of all the various stories Edward tells to mystify his son with as a child. Despite the many issues father and son have in their tense relationship as adults, Daniel Wallace and Tim Burton’s adaptation of Wallace’s novel focalizes on the strained relationship between Edward Bloom and William Bloom. In both Wallace’s novel and Burton’s film, they effectively portray how the relationship between Edward Bloom and William Bloom is filled with bitter resentment and indifference towards each other. Only with William’s attempt to finally reconcile with his dying father and navigating through his father fantastical fables does those established feelings of apathy and dislike begin to wane. With Burton’s craftily brilliant reconstruction of Wallace’s story does the stories of Edward Bloom and his son blossom onto screen.
Beowulf is the exact image of a perfect hero. He is unimaginably strong, selfless, determined and courageous. Victor Frankenstein may be much less of a hero, but a hero nonetheless. Heroism is often seen as someone who is strong, brave, selfless and determined. It is someone who would risk their own life for the benefit of others. It is someone who is physically strong and mentally capable of enduring extreme pain and hardship. Heroism can ultimately be defined as someone who puts others ahead of themselves.

In 1993, Langston Hughes released his memoir called 'The Big Sea'. Years later, Chapter Three, 'Salvation', would be turned into a movie directed by Bruce Schwartz in 2003. Though both the movie and the story focus on Langston's experience as a child in his aunt's church, the movie gives the reader a wider view and feel for the emotions that went through young Langston's mind at the time. The book does not do the actual events of the story as much justice as one would expect it to, but the movie certainly does.

A good general definition of a hero is a person who is idealized or admired for outstanding achievements, courage, bravery, noble qualities, and unselfish acts for others (Goins, 2012).
Translating a novel into a film can be quite a daunting task. Often times, some parts will be condensed or eliminated from the screen play altogether. Directs will see things differently and occasionally the movie will not emulate its book counterpart at all. Fortunately, Rumble Fish’s movie did not undergo drastic changes. The film adaptation of Rumble Fish does a satisfactory job of retelling S.E. Hinton’s work or literature and even adds on to it. This is evident through the changes made and creative liberties taken, the portrayal of the characters, and the alternate ending.
