Friendship and betrayal are two different things that should never be mixed. It becomes toxic and almost fake; a poison. The story of “Sula” by Toni Morrison, is exactly that; one of friendship and betrayal. Toni Morrison who is an award winning novelist and professor at Princeton University, and has written many award winning novels including “Sula” (1973) and “Beloved” (1987). Most of her novels explore the lives and experiences of African Americans. “Sula” is a great example in which Morrison explores the friendship of two African American girls who become close friends but grow apart as traumatic experiences affect their lives. This novel explores the reoccurring theme of how betrayal can break relationships which is shown through the lives of Eva, Sula, and Boyboy in the novel. …show more content…

Eva believed that she was doing her son Plum, a favor. She felt she had done everything she could to make him grow up and live his life like a man should. When Eva realized that she was not successful, she decided to set her son on fire. This was her way of freeing her son from himself and from her. “I thought of a way he could die like a man not all scrunched up inside my womb, but like a man” (Page 72). Plum was going backwards. Instead of growing up he found himself almost wanting to go back into his mother’s womb. The situation can also be considered a betrayal to Eva. After enduring many hardships and raising him alone, Plum betrays Eva by destroying everything she worked
