Bernard Ebbers Bernard Ebbers is Canadian Businessman who is well known today for his connection in one of the most mentioned frauds in the history of the United States. His beginnings trace back to Mississippi where he emerged as administrator of a hotel chain. Later Ebbers got involved in important mergers and acquisitions. The business grew rapidly, and in few years, he became a tycoon in command of one of the most important telecommunication companies in the world. Years later, however, his involvement in fraudulent business activities sent him to jail where he is now serving twenty-five years. Ebbers Leadership Accounts of individuals who had direct contact with Ebbers indicate that he possessed positive leadership traits and that he influenced through modeling. According to these accounts Ebbers was a philanthropist, he gave back to the community by volunteering his time for the needy. Community leaders regarded him as “a responsible business leader” (Trevino and Brown 2005 Pg. 91). Ebbers was also described as hardworking and dedicated. Charles Ponzi was born in Italy in 1882. Born to a wealthy family, Ponzi put off work as long as possible and attended college at the University of Rome. Knowing he was avoiding the inevitable and seeing no appeal in the Italian business world, he immigrated to the United States. In 1903, upon entering the United States at the age of 21, Ponzi proceeded into Canada. In 1909, he was convicted of forgery in events surrounding the collapse of the Montreal banking firm of Zrossi & Co., of which he was a member. As punishment, he was sentenced to a three-year term in the St. Vincent De Paul Penitentiary in Montreal. Released from Canadian Prison after only twenty months for good behavior, Ponzi entered the United States again on July 30, 1910. Inspiration The world has many photographers that anyone can look at. You can call me an amateur or say I don’t really understand the art, but when I look at most of the pictures available, and I have looked at thousands lately, I don’t see anything different in the style of photography. I just saw the pictures. I see pictures of beautiful subjects and pictures of ugly subjects. I never really thought about the difference between being the photographer instead of the subject, until I saw Elliott Erwitt.
Edward Estlin Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 14, 1894. He earned a BA from Harvard and volunteered to go to France during World War I with the Ambulance Corps. After the war, he stayed in Paris, writing and painting, and later returned to the US. He died in Conway, New Hampshire, in 1962. Cummings is one of the most innovative contemporary poets, he used unconventional punctuation and capitalization, and unusual line, word, and even letter placements - namely, ideograms. Cummings' most difficult form of poetry is probably the ideogram; it is extremely terse and it combines both visual and auditory elements. There may be sounds or characters on the page that cannot be verbalized or cannot convey the same message if pronounced and not read. Four of Cummings' poems "la," "mortals," "!blac," and "swi" illustrate the ideogram form quite well. Cummings utilizes unique syntax in these poems in order to convey messages visually as well as verbally.
As defined in Milestone One, the issues that Engstrom Auto Mirror faced were how to improve productivity through a better production and business plan than the current Scanlon Plan, and how to restore good communication and mutual trust among management and the employees of the organization. Although Bent began his time with Engstrom using neo-classical organization theory, and was genuinely concerned about his workers and their freedom to create and grow, his recent disregard for how his behavior impacted his employees brought this theory to a grinding halt. Bent no longer listened to his employees, and therefore they no longer felt heard; the Scanlon Plan needed the proverbial “shot in the arm” that Bent recommended in Beer & Collins (2008, p. 6). This attitude of Bent’s, which was a direct result of the difficulty of the economic times, is reflected in the poor employee morale at the company. Initially, Bent was attempting to incorporate a type of systems approach to Engstrom, as well, which was abandoned as his bad attitude continued to predominate over his business decisions at the company.
Jordan Belfort is the notorious 1990’s stockbroker who saw himself earning fifty million dollars a year operating a penny stock boiler room from his Stratton Oakmont, Inc. brokerage firm. Corrupted by drugs, money, and sex he went from being an innocent twenty – two year old on the fringe of a new life to manipulating the system in his infamous “pump and dump” scheme. As a stock swindler, he would motivate his young brokers through insane presentations to rile them up as they defrauded investors with duplicitous stock sales. Toward the end of this debauchery tale he was convicted for securities fraud and money laundering for which he was sentenced to twenty – two months in prison as well as recompensing two – hundred million in restitution to any swindled stock buyers of his brokerage firm (A&E Networks Television). Though his lavish spending and berserk party lifestyle was consumed by excessive greed, he displayed both positive and negative aspects of business communications.
The use of symbols in surrealism and the meaning within these paintings by Max Ernst played a significant influence on the notion of my experimental art making. He was a German painter, sculptor and a graphic artist but also considered as one of the primary pioneers of the Dada and Surrealism movement. They aimed to revolt against everyday reality by exploring the construction of the unconscious mind. By exploring the mind and transforming reality by surveying the desires of the human nature, it allows one to contemplate on the actuality and the realities of our world. Uniquely, Ernst created his own set of techniques such as collage, frottage, grattage, decalcomania and oscillation in order to convey his symbolism of his art making – but it also later incentivized artists such as Jackson Pollock and William De Kooning, revealing his such influence and impact in the art world.
