The account of Berengaria's life ends here, but the few known facts about her raise more questions than answers. An unanswered question relates to her marriage, which gives no evidence that her husband ever had any deeper attachment for her than total indifference. The simple fact is that Berengaria was chosen by Eleanor of Aquitaine to be the wife of her son Richard the Lionheart. Berengaria married Richard in 1191, when he was 36 and she was in around 22-25 years of age. Judged against custom of the time, their marriage came surprisingly late in life for both of them. Royal and noble first weddings usually occurred in one’s middle teens to assure production of several heirs (preferably male warriors), who would provide continuance of dynastic estates. Richard and Berengaria’s marriage lasted eight years until Richard’s death in 1199. Even though she had many remaining potential child bearing years, Berengaria did not marry again, and she had no recorded children or stillbirths, Berengaria possibly was barren, or her marriage to Richard may never have been consummated. Incredible as it seems, the latter possibility may be true. At no point in Richard’s life did he show anything but disinterested unconcern for Berengaria before, and during their marriage. Many historians conclude that Richard’s indifference to his wife signifies to that the Lionheart had a deviant sexual orientation. Documented records of Richard's adolescent infatuation and behavior also suggest underlying homosexual attraction for young Prince Philip Augustus of France, when the two princes were teenage friends in the French court in Paris. Loretta Young, a breathtakingly lovely statuesque blond, always took pride in being remembered for her role as Berengaria. One asks, “Why should plain petite brunette Berengaria not have the privilege of being remembered as being like Loretta Young?” It probably makes little difference and causes no harm (except as violation to history) for so-called, theatrical historical-fantasies, to play only for enjoyment with no concern for factual accuracy. It is well known that audiences prefer history to be presented, as it ought to be, rather than the way shabby events usually take place in reality. For myself, although I know better, I always think of Berengaria as a flawless stately Nordic princess, which makes it difficult for me to understand why Richard was not pierced by Cupid’s arrow and thereby much more attentive to his wife.

Beowulf is one of the most bravest legends. He has no fear! This man will go and fight whoever needs to be fought, with or without help. As soon as Grendel's mother came to get her son’s arm back, Beowulf immediately set out to go find and kill her. He went to the place where she lives and after he plunged into the water, Beowulf swam all the way down to her lair. After he reached the lair, “Beowulf got ready, / donned his war-gear, indifferent to death; / his mighty, hand-forged, fine-webbed mail / would soon meet with the menace underwater” (1442-1445). This task also seems to be a death sentence written all over it, but Beowulf looks death in the face, and goes after his mother. He knows that they are immortal, but right next to Grendel’s mother, is the only sword that can kill them. Beowulf is brave enough to grab that powerful sword, and kill both Grendel and his mother. Men today would not do that. Beowulf does not just stop at Grendel and his mother: he continues to fight more monsters to defend what is his. Like many other women of her time Eleanor came from a long line of noble and royal blood. The court of her father and grandfather was thought to be the main culture center of the time. At age 15, with her father’s passing, Eleanor became the sole heiress and ruler of the largest duchy in France – Aquitane. Eleanor was then betrothed to Louis VII of France in order to unite their vast territories. In fifteen years however, Eleanor’s marriage and queenship were over. The pope on the pretext of close kinship ties annulled her unhappy marriage to Louis. At age 30 Eleanor had given up her throne and her daughters and returned to Aquitane to rule. Within a few years Eleanor was married to Henry Plantengent, the Duke of Normandy and ruler of the second most powerful duchy in France (second to her own Aquitane). In 1154 Henry was crowned King of England and Eleanor was now Queen of England, duchess of Aquitane and duchess of Normandy. “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is written in an entertaining and adventurous spirit, but serves a higher purpose by illustrating the century’s view of courtly love. Hundreds, if not thousands, of other pieces of literature written in the same century prevail to commemorate the coupling of breathtaking princesses with lionhearted knights after going through unimaginable adventures, but only a slight few examine the viability of such courtly love and the related dilemmas that always succeed. “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” shows that women desire most their husband’s love, Overall, “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” shows that the meaning of true love does not stay consistent, whether between singular or separate communities and remains timeless as the depictions of love from this 14th century tale still hold true today.
In the story of Berenice, she is the protagonist in the story of the same name. Poe’s narrator is Egaeus, Berenice’s cousin, to whom she is engaged to marry. As this story begins Poe has the narrator describe Berenice in comparison to himself. The reader is able to begin to visualize Berenice as a child with these lengthily comparisons. In spite of the weaknesses, Ivanhoe and King Richard demonstrate true chivalric characteristics. They exemplify integrity, loyalty to the king, a love for adventure and bravery. Through this book, the reader learns the meaning of moral guidelines due to the examples set by King Richard and Ivanhoe. These examples challenge us to search for our own moral guidelines. “The noble knight slays the dragon and rescues the fair maiden…and they live happily ever after.” This seemingly cliché finale encompasses all the ideals of courtly love, which began in the Medieval Period and still exists today. While these ideals were prevalent in medieval society, they still existed with much controversy. Geoffrey Chaucer, a poet of the period, comments on courtly love in his work The Canterbury Tales. Through the use of satiric elements and skilled mockery, Chaucer creates a work that not only brought courtly love to the forefront of medieval society but also introduced feministic ideals to the medieval society. At times, Chaucer even makes readers question his beliefs by presenting contrasting elements of principle in The Knight’s Tale and The Wife of Bath’s Tale, both tales told in his profound, multifaceted The Canterbury Tales.

This essay will discuss the novel Wyrd. It will explore some of the concepts that are found in the novel and attempt to extend the issues to a point at which they become more clear, and prove the assertion that, just as Wyrd is a fast moving narrative that spans continents and ages, it is a novel of ideas. Wyrd was, in length, a short to medium length novel that was written by Sue Gough. Briefly, it was the story of Berengaria, Saladin's daughter and wife of King Richard. After her husbands death, she was moved to a French nunnery with her handmaiden and son, the prince (incognito). There she kept an explicit and wise diary, recording the events in her life. She founded a healing order, and invented a cordial that was surprisingly popular among the village folk. She continued to practice Viking religion in subtle ways, and encouraged spiritual openness, as opposed to the dogmatic teachings of the time, vesting confidence and a sense of worth in her fellow devotees. However, she was plagued by her evil anti-thesis, the Abbe De Ville, who encouraged her son to join in a 'children's crusade' -- and unwise and dangerous religious march. Pat, her son, was eventually sold as a slave in the middle east, but the Abbe did not know this and told Berengaria the 'news' of his demise. Unable to cope with such a revelation, she died and was entombed, as a mummy, with her book beneath the priory.
