Heroes are an integral part of today’s culture, and have been around for many years. Numerous tales were passed down of great and powerful individuals who completed many feats and conquered many foes. The protagonists of these stories were dubbed “Heroes” and possess many qualities which makes them who they are. These qualities range from super strength, super speed, and much more. Although a vast amount of them portray these abilities, the quality that one must possess in order to be a hero is courage, for without courage a hero would not have the guts to face the many dangers that they will have to undertake. I feel this is the most important quality for a hero to have, otherwise all the other qualities would be useless. He is motivated to prove his strength and bravery to others by seeking dangerous enemies and battling with them, later boasting of his triumphs and victories. Beowulf demonstrates his courage in three situations. First, he saves Hrothgar and Herot by killing the gruesome creature, Grendel, in an intense battle solely relying on his bare hands and no armour. Having faced Grendel with virtually no protection to aid him, his actions display how much confidence Beowulf puts into his capabilities. Secondly, Beowulf then dives to take on Grendel’s mother's in her own territory, her underwater lair, and emerges victorious. Although Beowulf had infiltrated an unfamiliar environment, he remained self-assured he would survive. Lastly, as the King of Geats, he takes his own life by killing off the dragon previously terrorizing the town.
