Benvolio's Diary

Dear Diary,

Today has been a grave day. My dear friend Mercutio has been stabbed

by my greatest foe Tybalt. However he too is dead. I should have

stopped this tragedy even before it had started. This is entirely my

fault! What have I done? I could have stopped that Tybalt when I had

the chance. I remember saying to Mercutio "by my head, here comes the

Capulets." I warned him.

My heart said 'fight' but my fearful mind said 'hide'. But I am not

sorry for the death of Tybalt. He deserved what he got. Tybalt is a

scoundrel and a villain to society.

The events of that day are still clear in my mind. I remember Mercutio

and me going about our own business and being civil. I remember the

warning which we had received from the Prince not a few weeks ago. He

said that anyone caught fighting would be punished by sentence of

death. I would not dare betray the Prince, especially after the

entrance he had made the last time. The way in which he had entered

with his bodyguards all on horseback, was so gallant.

Well we were going about our own businesses when we caught a glimpse

of the Capulets. Mercutio saw the Capulets at about a 100 meters

approaching rapidly. Mercutio instantly saw this as an opportunity to

get revenge on the Capulets especially after the way they had taunted

us Montague. At this point I felt that there was a chance to stop

Mercutio. But he was too strong in his drunken rage and his arrogant

male pride was at stake.

At first it started with harmless bantering. Then abruptly, both

Mercutio and Tybalt drew swords. Still at this point I never

considered the fact that either of them would get...

... middle of paper ...

...ining of Tybalt's shirt. I screamed

for Romeo to run away at least for his own safety. So he did.

The Prince arrived on the scene to see two dead bodies, one from the

house of Capulet and the other a dear friend of the Montages. I was

left to explain what I had witnessed to the Prince. An image that will

never leave my mind is of Lady Capulet mother of Tybalt. She was

weeping helplessly at the sight of her son's dead body.

Today has been the most tragic day of my entire life. My two friends

have deserted me. The first, Romeo, is banished from Verona and the

second, Mercutio, stabbed by the blade of Tybalt. I am now left on my

own. What if the Capulets attack me? What defence will I have and who

will protect me now? My future seems uncertain and my life is in the

balance. This may possibly be my last day of my life.
