How does being raised by a teen parent affect a child later on in life? Most people would think that being raised by teen parents doesn’t affect a child as much, as long as they have both parents raising them. Although this can be true in some cases, what people don’t realize is that teens haven’t exactly learned important life skills necessary for the well development of a child as well as for themselves. Being raised by teen parents causes a negative effect on a child due to the fact that these children can suffer from health problems as they’re growing up, and their parents usually drop out of school after finding out about the pregnancy. The type of skills they’re missing out on include ones that help with finding proper jobs, as well as survival skills for adulthood. In high school, students are taught things like how to act during a job interview, how to budget money, or even how to buy a home, but when they drop out, they never learn how to do these things, which can affect the stabilization of their future home. Growing up, children may experience rejection from their parents (When Children Have Children). Most of the time, these pregnancies aren’t expected or they’re not wanted, so teens reject their child and avoid caring or providing for them. Children grow up being isolated most of their lives and may continue doing so without their parents. Teen parents aren’t always aware of what’s going on in their child’s life (When Children Have Children). They drop out of high school, so they don’t go to college before actually having kids, so they don’t learn much about the development of a child or a teenager. This causes them to not be able to distinguish real problems with common phases, so they don’t know how to properly treat these things. ...an see, there are many reasons why children and teenagers may misbehave. They could be tired, hungry, sick or just scared of the position they're in. There could be problems at home with family, fighting, and competition, and attention seeking within society. Children are easier to understand to why they misbehave but when it comes to teenagers it’s a little ridiculous. They will make lousy decisions that can cause a rough road ahead of them all because they want to be noticed. It’s unpleasant to see what this society has come too.
All over the world, parents decide to divorce and this leaves children hurt and confused. The children may lose contact with one parent or they might decide to makes some bad decisions in their life due to the feeling of neglect. Some of the bad choices could be mental health disorders and struggling in academics. There are impacts on teens that could be short term but there are also long term effects too, because most of them look up to their parents as role models. Dysfunctional families are very common and not always as extreme as people expect them to be, however even seemingly irrelevant problems can have severe effects on a growing childs mind, often resulting in disorders such as anxiety. The stigma against mental health in society prevents people from learning about how parents and school affect child development, which results in adolescents and adults with poor mental health unable to function normally in society.
Babies, as well as the teenage mothers, face long-time problems may face long-term problems from the pregnancy. These problems may include school failure, poverty, and physical or mental illness. Babies born to teenagers are at greater risk for neglect and abuse than those of a woman. Teenage mothers may feel like they are being demanded to do the job and they may take their frustration out on the child (When 1).
Being pregnant at a young age puts adolescent mothers at a higher risk for short and long-term complications. This can be either health or social complications. Teen pregnancy not only put the mothers at risk but also put the newborns at risk for low-birth weight, premature births, and developmental delays (Strunk, 2008).
Children coming from adolescent parents are more likely to have poorer health, behavioral, and educational outcomes throughout their lives (comparing to children with older parents). Pregnant juveniles are less likely to gain sufficient weight during pregnancy, this can lead to a low birth weight of the child. Low birth weight is associated with several infant and childhood disorders and a higher rate of infant mortality. Low-birthweight babies are more likely to have organs that are not fully developed, which can result in complications, such as bleeding in the brain, respiratory distress syndrome, and intestinal problems (Health Communities). Also, teenager’s brains have not fully developed yet. Scans have revealed changes of the volume, of gray matter in parts of the cortex that are “responsible for more ‘top-down’ control, controlling impulses, and planning ahead—the hallmarks of adult behavior…”(The Teen Brain). This means, minors do not understand the concept of ‘what they are doing now can affect them later life’. Many fall into peer pressure that's because of the friends they come across with. Friends can influence them so much once becoming an adult it isn’t the same because your brain has grown out of it. Many also lack confidence while many look like adults their brain resembles a child’s. While their bodies are aging their brain is rearranging itself in a way that temporarily makes it act the same way it did when they were younger. Most teens are overly emotional studies have found that teens have a much harder time speaking and to other people and so they sometimes react irrationally to emotional situations. Teens aren’t able to raise a steady family, they don’t have jobs, their children won’t have fathers, and they aren’t responsible enough for that yet. Family issues, poverty, and homelessness cause students to drop out of high school as it impacts education by placing stressful obstacles in children’s learning path. A National study found, “Overall, 22 percent of children who have lived in poverty do not graduate from high school, compared to 6 percent of those who have never been poor” (National Study). Lack of educational success can also contribute to throwing in the towel on school. Some students may not be receiving the additional supports to give them success in school. Imagine coming home on the bus after a ten hour day and having your ninth grader ask for help on their algebra. If you possessed the skills, which you likely do not, you may be too exhausted to help. In addition there is still dinner to cook and other household chores to complete. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”).
