Beer Run This can be symbolic for the Native Americans in general to allow the sells on the reservation. The ban of alcohol that was a major issue is that Native Americans might have a different enzymes that are unable to break down the alcohol. The traders also used it to their advantage to trick the Native Americans for their goods such as food, animal hide…etc. There is a new younger Nation meaning that majority of the population are younger than 30 years old according to the Bureau of Census 2000. Many young people go out to towns like Gallup, Albuquerque and Las Vegas to enjoy the night life. Knowing that the Navajo Nation Police Department is already short staffed with qualified police officers, this does not stop the people voting to allow and support the issue. The casino allows to purchase liquor sells and majority of the people that attend the Navajo Casinos are NAVAJO! The Native American were all prohibited from drinking since the 1800’s but yet some of the Native Americans were able to consume alcohol. This did not help the problem it only made it worst for Native Americans to accept the fact that they could have yet another item that the white man brought. The Diné philosophy is against the casinos but yet we agreed to build not one or two but four and fifth on the way. Selling of alcohol should be allowed on the Navajo Nation. When you live on the Navajo Nation you have to commute at least 30 minutes or more before getting to your destination. Now imagine driving with the high number of drunk drivers that are driving back and forth to the nearest liquor store. You, your family and the drunk drivers are all on the same road going 55-60mph. If a liquor store was closer, than the drive wouldn’t be so long and would save many lives, then the long commutes in order to get a drink. Then they have to find a ride back to their homes. So think about the number of people that have no transportation on the Navajo Nation if they have a drinking problem they will not build walls in order to obtain the liquor to feed their habit. Therefore decreasing the number of hitchhikers on the road and fewer accidents. They can build a local bars and allow them to drink there and walk home instead of driving or have a free cab services that commute them back home safely, yet another business that can be established on the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation not allowing sells on the reservation and making the border towns rich like Gallup and Farmington. While, that money could be spent here on the Navajo Nation to help people with the problems already. Funding can go to treatments and more research can help our own people become knowledgeable with the rest of America today. Bringing more businesses and increasing population will happen for the Navajo Nation if they allow alcohol sells on the Navajo Nation. Overall the Navajo Nation should consider alcohol sells on the Navajo Nation to bring down the number of deaths due to hitchhiking, funding the growing problem that already exist, to get the highway fatality rate down for drunk drivers. Not to mention brining more business to the Navajo Nation and allowing the Nation
