Hearing my friend recount the physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-partner should not have come as a shock to me, considering the verbal and emotional abuse he often lavished on her followed by the 'teary-eyed' apologies; these are all stages exemplified in the Battered Woman Syndrome. This narrative is common among women and girls who suffer intimate partner violence from their partners. However, I am particularly interested in young Nigerian women, who migrated to Canada in the hopes of a better education and employment. My research would focus on the challenges involved in reporting the violence and seeking assistance, and the distinct social factors involved. Being in a foreign country, would pose obstacles for these individuals; they may not have the necessary support network, there is a difference between the Canadian and Nigerian police and the justice system. …show more content…

As a black, immigrant, woman, my perception of the world (and vice versa) is different. My current program, a double major in Women's Studies and Economics also contributes to this perception. In Nigeria, I recognized only sexism, tribalism, and classism as forms of oppression, but in Canada, I was exposed to others. There is a passion that I derive from Women Studies since it discusses issues that I have witnessed in my personal life and others. For instance, my Women and Justice seminar taught by Professor Holly Johnson had a significant role in determining my research topic. It focused mostly on harassment and assault on women bodies, but IPV resonated with me considering I had seen others suffer
