Within the literature review Bailey and Shelton have looked at the relationship between children and their parents and how the upbringing between the two of them has led to the child feeling isolated and detached from the family environment. This, in adulthood, has led to the individual either being an incarcerated criminal or non-criminal psychopath. This is what Bailey and Shelton have discovered through their review of two studies that Marshall & Cooke and Frodi et al. conducted. Bailey and Shelton have also discussed the variables that are associated with classing an individual as either being psychopathic or non-psychopathic, such as childhood institutionalisation and abuse.

Across the literature review there are some points raised by Bailey and Shelton that are not supported by evidence and therefore further research is needed to ensure that a full understanding of the points raised can be interpreted and understood to the maximum.
The PCL, created by Robert Hare, is not sufficiently supported by evidence. ‘Therefore, as research suggests, most cases of psychopathy within a forensic setting will also meet the DSM-IV-R criteria for ASPD’ (Hare 1996 cited in Bailey and Shelton, 2014:366). The research only suggests that this is the case and is not definite. It is based on assumption rather than clear evidence. Bailey and Shelton have also been unable to cover much more on the PCL due to there not being enough evidence. As they state ‘The ability of the PCL, and subsequent versions, to gauge psychopathy without the criminality associated with ASPD, a phenomenon commonly referred to as the successful or non-criminal psychopath, is beyond the scope of this literature review’ (Bailey and Shelton, 2014:366).
