The movie Babel was an interesting movie that was able to capture many different cultures, and social classes. The movie took people from many different cultural backgrounds, and told a story in which their lives were interwoven though a tragedy. The movie was more than entertainment, as it not only addressed different cultural conflicts but also examined intercultural matters. In the movie we are introduced to two children Mike and Debbie who are being watched by their nanny Amelia. Due to the shooting of their mother in Morocco the two children are left in the care of Amelia longer than originally planed. The border patrol agents question Santiago and Amelia about the two children, as they don’t have proper documentation. The phrase “they don’t look like you” comes up when Amelia says she is the children’s aunt. This causes the border patrol to stereotype and typecast the two Mexicans. They believe that Mexicans are trying to kidnap the children, and that they might be smuggling drugs or people across the border. Santiago is very proud of his heritage, and gets offended with the behavior of the border patrol. Santiago is a polychromic person and his behaviors clash with border patrols monochromic behaviors. Being a polychromic person makes Santiago want to deal with multiple tasks at the same time, and this comes off as combative. Santiago acts rashly when confronted with the risk of arrest. This causes him to endanger not only his life, but also those in the car. In this case it is not as much culture but personality style that causes conflict between the characters. The movie Babel is a great case study movie that offers a few in-depth character and cultural analyses. It shows how different cultures can get into conflict and also work together in the face of despair. Knowing how other cultures interact within themselves, and other countries is imperative to reducing conflict, and learning to work with
