One could be led to believe the motive behind Avi’s motivation to write about a poor peasant instead of a lord or prince in the barbaric times that it once stood would be to show the depraved side of that medieval time period. Avi shows examples of how cruel the time period was for peasants such as the conditions such as the manure and human waste in the streets of Great Wexly, or the room at the inn that Crispin stayed in it smelled of ale and barf.
