Personal values help individuals dictate their actions and beliefs. It is common that people will have their own set of core values that represent who they are as an individual and what they stand for. Personally, I have many values that I find to be very important to me. The first value is authenticity. In my own words, in order to be truly authentic, you must embrace your true self. Authenticity does not come from hiding behind a fake persona or masking your true identity. Instead, authenticity stems from being genuine and true to yourself. Authenticity was not always one of my core values. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I was truly able to embrace my authentic self. Up until this time, I would pretend to be someone that I was not in order to feel “cool” or “popular”. It was not until I realized that those adjectives meant nothing that I finally wanted to embody authenticity. Social workers should care about the inherent dignity of every person, no matter their age, class, ethnicity, race, gender, or sexual orientation. According to Frederic G. Reamer (2013), “Social workers do what they can to promote individuals’ capacity to pursue their own goals in life”. This value also aligns with helping client’s to resolve conflict in their daily lives. I find this value very important. I try my hardest in order to help all people understand their worth as a human being. Someone that is extremely close to me struggles with depression. Every day, I strive to help them find their worth within themselves, even when the depression is convincing them of the opposite. Everyone has their own personal values that the gain throughout their lives. Some of these values are passed down through the different generations of their family. Values can change over time and some people learn more values as they grow up. I personally have gained a range of different values in the past eighteen years of my life. My own values include: respect, honesty, empathy and trust. I gained the value of respect through my parents as I was always told to show respect to others and they would then show me respect back. In the conclusion of Charles Taylor’s “The Ethics of Authenticity,” Taylor addresses how modern individuals need to rediscover what is most important and valuable. The culture of individualism and authenticity is ingrained in our modern language and society. And while individuals may believe that individualism is the cause of the three malaises, they must acknowledge that individualism points to authenticity. Individualism is about a common humanity, and that the value of individualism is greater than just ourselves.
Through socialization, people discover the advantages of concealing their genuine selves. Merely the thought of being marginalized for uniqueness gives some individuals anxiety. Holding non-traditional beliefs, wearing peculiar clothing, saying something colorful or simply deciding not to conform to societal standards puts a person at risk. Subsequently, cloaking ourselves in facades and wearing intricate masks can become so commonplace that we forget who we truly are as a result.
