Audrey Hepburn is a name remembered by many, and for various reasons. Most remember her from her roles in Breakfast at Tiffany's and Roman Holiday. Some only remember her because she was said to be one of the most naturally beautiful women in history. What very few remember of her unfortunately, are her charitable acts. Audrey Hepburn was not just a beautiful and talented actress, and she consisted of much more, such as her large, giving heart, that led her to help many charities, and her giving nature has continued on after her death.
Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929, under the name Audrey Kathleen Ruston. She was born in the Ixelles district of Brussels, Belgium. Her parents, Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston, a Nazi sympathizer and Baroness Ella van Heemstra were British Union of Fascists Members. After van Heemstra caught him in bed with the nanny, Ruston quickly fled. In the 1960's, Hepburn would locate him again through Red Cross, and though remain emotionally detached, support him financially until his death.
Soon after, Hepburn and her mother moved to Kent, South East England, and Hepburn was enrolled in a school in Elham, known as "The Mesdamoiselles Smith", a small school with only about fourteen students in attendance. In 1939, when war was declared on Germany, the pair moved back to Arnhem, thinking the Netherlands would be free from German attack as they would remain neutral. Hepburn was enrolled in the Arnhem Conservatory until 1945, where she also studied ballet with Winja Marova. After her half brother was sent to a labor camp, Hepburn was moved in with Baron Aarnoud van Heemstra in Velp. Throughout the war, she was a victim of malnutrition, and developed Anemia, Edema, and respiratory issues.

Alan Brown's story is a comical yet emotional tale of a Japanese man obsessed with American women, after viewing his first Audrey Hepburn film at the age of nine. Jane, a flamboyant American English teacher, seduces Toshi, a twenty-three-year-old manga cartoonist living in Tokyo. As Toshi tries to carve a life for himself, he discovers the complexities associated with sexuality and American women, especially Jane. Throughout the book, Brown beautifully captures how atypical and baffling the Western style can be to someone from outside the culture. Not only does Toshi struggle in his relations with American women throughout the novel, but also with a troubled childhood and a family secret that is slowly exposed to the reader. Brown's witty lines and dry humor make the book entertaining while still supplying an accurate depiction of many national characteristics through the character's actions.
People still remember Bessie Coleman today for her bravery, courage, and her leadership. Bessie showed these outstanding traits she had, by not always thinking of herself. She did not go with the flow as we say it in the year 2014. She did what she believed was right. She stood up and told the person who was in charge to let the colored or Native Americans watch her perform. That is why Bessie Coleman is important in the world.
Marilyn Monroe, Norma Jeane Mortenson. A devious soul but a pure heart, a black past, but a bright future; she became one of the most idolized figures in society. Norma was definitely not born with a silver spoon in her mouth, and she never sugar coated her life to the media. She was straight forward which made her heavily known for her quotes such as “I learned to walk as a baby and I haven’t had a lesson since.” (Marilyn Monroe). This was the beginning to her life story as a hero. This may not seem inspiring or heroic to many by the lack of knowledge a person may have on Norma. In the depths of her quotes lay a deep, heartfelt life though. For this quote may seem sensational and comical to the ear, but Marilyn was transferred to many foster homes not really having a parent that would show her the way. What a good role model would do though, and what Norma courageously has shown society, is that when life knocks you down, get up and hit life back twice as hard. Norma Jeane Mortenson, married Jim Dougherty, and started working. Soon she created the character Marilyn Monroe, she dyed her hair blonde, wore short dresses, and she became the momentous and inspirational character that everyone saw through television, newspapers, and photos. She was one of the greatest actors, singers, and models of the nineteen forties and fifties. But like every hero they suffer and create their own demise. Jeane, Marilyn Monroe, is a shakespearean tragic hero, because like every hero she must fall.

A fiery Scots-Yankee known for her intelligence, humor and iron determination, Katharine Hepburn demonstrated remarkable staying power in a screen career that spanned more than six decades, winning three of her four Best Actress Oscars after the age of 60. Credit must go to her extraordinary parents, a noted urologist father, who at great professional risk brought the facts about venereal disease to a wider public, and his dedicated suffragette wife (an early champion of birth control), for providing an eccentric and genteel upbringing stressing Spartan physical discipline. Out of their Connecticut crucible emerged a strong-minded, outspoken, original who would become one of the nation's most admired and beloved actresses. Hepburn did it more on brains than beauty, though she was certainly not unattractive, and her strength of character, high moral fiber and regal poise were enduring qualities that continued to bring her choice parts as she aged.
