Recommended by Bill Gates, I read the novel called The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion which illustrates the way Asperger’s Syndrome manifests in a person’s everyday life. The main character, Don Tillson, suffers from Asperger’s, and as his symptoms are illustrated throughout the book, one can see two prevalent aspects of Asperger’s Syndrome. On one hand, Don exhibits highly intelligent and orderly behavior: Don is a professor of genetics and consistently shows a high level of competence and expertise in the field of genetics. In regards to his daily life, Don depends on a highly organized daily schedule that determines the activities he has to complete and at what time he must complete them. In the novel, this difficulty in dealing with social interactions is mainly illustrated through Don’s romantic relationships. Throughout his life, Don’s romantic relationships ended in absolute failure due to his lack of social skills, however, in the book he decides that it’s time for him to find someone to marry. Unlike most people, Don approaches his quest to find a significant other in more logical and practical ways. Instead of letting his emotions guide him to determine whether he has found the right partner, he constructs a 16-page questionnaire that aims to cross-eliminate all the incompatible women for him. Essentially, this questionnaire consists of a list of characteristics defining the most ideal and compatible partner for him. His seemingly logical and practical approach becomes challenged when he meets a girl named Rosie. He quickly becomes intrigued by Rosie, however, her personality defies almost every component of his questionnaire.
