From July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, the government gave Planned Parenthood $528.4 million to fund their services, except abortion. On top of that, Planned Parenthood receives $775 million from private contributions & bequests, non-government health services revenue, and other operating revenue to fund what the government doesn’t cover (Freiburger). Planned Parenthood is an organization that performs abortions, aids in prenatal care, informs young adults about health, and treats STDs and reproductive issues. The government is currently in a predicament. They previously funded Planned Parenthood, but have recently decided to stop the funding. Margaret Sanger was the founder of a small birth control center in Brooklyn. Back in the times of the clinic around 1916, women were not allowed to do the things they are allowed to do today, such as vote, control her reproduction and own property. That small center, through a series of fortunate events for Sanger, turned into what we now know today as Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc. Planned Parenthood's mission it to keep keep being able to do the things she worked so hard to have to ability to do. They believe funding Planned Parenthood is like funding a slaughterhouse for unborn humans. In Janell Ross’s article “How Planned Parenthood Actually Uses Its Federal Funding”, she talks about a video posted showing a Planned Parenthood worker discussing with someone about the sale of fetal parts. The video is heavily edited, so it’s credibility is dampered. What one can make out of the video is up to interpretation. As it was stated earlier, Planned Parenthood has received $528.4 million from the government. That is about 40.5% of their total funding. So without that, you would have to raise prices or something of the sorts to compensate. Ross feels that even if the government stopped funding Planned Parenthood, “it’s [not] likely that such a change would significantly reduce the number of abortions the agency’s doctors perform each year or how those procedures contribute to the total number of pregnancies terminated in the United States”
