From July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, the government gave Planned Parenthood $528.4 million to fund their services, except abortion. On top of that, Planned Parenthood receives $775 million from private contributions & bequests, non-government health services revenue, and other operating revenue to fund what the government doesn’t cover (Freiburger). Planned Parenthood is an organization that performs abortions, aids in prenatal care, informs young adults about health, and treats STDs and reproductive issues. The government is currently in a predicament. They previously funded Planned Parenthood, but have recently decided to stop the funding. The question is: should Planned Parenthood still be federally funded? Of the many opinions, there are …show more content…
Margaret Sanger was the founder of a small birth control center in Brooklyn. Back in the times of the clinic around 1916, women were not allowed to do the things they are allowed to do today, such as vote, control her reproduction and own property. That small center, through a series of fortunate events for Sanger, turned into what we now know today as Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc. Planned Parenthood's mission it to keep keep being able to do the things she worked so hard to have to ability to do. According to plannedparenthood.org, they are currently “providing contraception and other health services to women and men, funding research on birth control and educating specialists and the public about the results, and advancing access to family planning in the United States and around the world” (Planned …show more content…
They believe funding Planned Parenthood is like funding a slaughterhouse for unborn humans. In Janell Ross’s article “How Planned Parenthood Actually Uses Its Federal Funding”, she talks about a video posted showing a Planned Parenthood worker discussing with someone about the sale of fetal parts. The video is heavily edited, so it’s credibility is dampered. What one can make out of the video is up to interpretation. As it was stated earlier, Planned Parenthood has received $528.4 million from the government. That is about 40.5% of their total funding. So without that, you would have to raise prices or something of the sorts to compensate. Ross feels that even if the government stopped funding Planned Parenthood, “it’s [not] likely that such a change would significantly reduce the number of abortions the agency’s doctors perform each year or how those procedures contribute to the total number of pregnancies terminated in the United States”
Dorothy Wardell’s article titled “Margaret Sanger: Birth Control’s Successful Revolutionary” explains what inspired Sanger ideas on contraception and what problems she faced while working to change the notions and laws on Birth Control. The central argument presented by Wardell is that Sanger’s efforts led to privileges for women’s bodies and health centers providing methods for women to act on these privileges (Wardell, 736). Although Wardell is effective in supporting her argument, it would be stronger if she included some historical context and evidence of Sanger’s opinion in her own words found in a speech of hers and in Family Limitation. Wardell begins by addressing that “…a definitive biography and assessment has yet to be written.”,
...still a vital part of world today. Planned Parenthood is not segregated to color or affluence and has definitely changed the world as we know it today. Margaret Sanger though a determined selfish women did not get everything the way she wanted it to be. She hung up fliers in immigrant neighborhoods just so the poor or colored would go to the clinic. She wanted these people to go to the birth control clinics so they couldn’t reproduce. Margaret believed that if you couldn’t support the family you already have you shouldn’t have more children and she was a strong believer that the inferior race should not be able to reproduce. All of Mrs. Sanger’s actions said more then what her voice said. Margaret Sanger was a powerful strong woman who was celebrated as an advocate of women’s rights; however her motives were for all the wrong reasons.
Margaret Sanger was the founder of The American League of Birth Control which later became Planned Parenthood and her argument in those times was that it was not fair for women who were from a lower class could not have access to Birth Control.
Recently Congress has sparked a debate as to whether or not the government should continue funding Planned Parenthood. Too many people are uneducated about the many services Planned
One of the most important roles that a nurse fulfills as a responsibility of the profession is the advocate. Nurses are responsible to provide the information needed for a patient to make a decision and consequently support that decision. Margaret Sanger was one of the most influential advocates for women’s health and sexual health in general. Margaret Sanger was a public health nurse in New York who noticed that there was a significant problem in the way that women were treated within the healthcare system. Through her efforts she started what is today known as Planned Parenthood, defeated laws preventing the distribution of contraceptives and information regarding contraceptives,
Planned Parenthood is non-profit and has been around for over fifty years. Planned Parenthood offers many services to women, other than abortions. A few of the services offered to women are free health care, such as anemia testing, cholesterol screening, physical exams for employees and for sports, flu vaccinations, aid in quitting smoking, high blood pressure testing, tetanus vaccinations, and thyroid screening. The many other services they offer include free birth control, emergency contraception, testing for STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), breast cancer screenings, cervical cancer screenings, pelvic exams, free information to women, and a number of other things.(“General Health”) Under the Hyde amendment that passed in 1976, there has been a legislative provision prohibiting the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion unless the pregnancy arises from incest, rape, or to save the life of the mother. During the fiscal year that ended in June 2014, Planned Parenthood affiliates around the country received $528.4 million in government funds. It has been estimated that 42 percent of their services went towards STD/STI testing and treatment, 34 percent went to contraceptive, 11 percent to women's health services, 9 percent to cancer screenings and prevention, 3 percent to abortion, and 1 percent to other services. The Progressive Era was a period of social and political reform beginning in the post Gilded Age 19th century and lasting through WWI. Industrial and urban growth of early 19th century America while representative of opportunity and future advancement simultaneously posed many difficulties for working class citizens. Prior concerns over the conditions of working class citizens were multiplied and magnified by overpopulated and impoverished urban communities. During this era many new Progressive agendas were introduced with the goal of reforming dated and unregulated policies, the most prominent of these, the birth control movement. The documents from chapter six of Constructing the American Past show that at its core, the birth control debate was a multifaceted social dispute with, religious political and racial influences.
(Fram, August 2015)”. Having said that their perspective on defunding Planned Parenthood is to cut the tax dollars by all means of supporting this organization. Their view is that a human life begins at conception and that abortion is killing another human being so they support the government to prohibit partial birth abortions.
Sanger, one of the pioneers of modern birth control, founded Planned Parenthood which was an
President- elect, Donald Trump, and Vice President- elect, Mike Pence, have stated their views on Planned Parenthood and how it should be defunded; especially Vice President elect, Mike Pence, who has a history of trying to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2007, Mike Pence introduced a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, and kept pushing for it until it passed in 2011. "If Planned Parenthood wants to be involved in providing counseling services and HIV testing, they ought not be in the business of providing abortions," Pence told Sarah Kliff in 2011. "As long as they aspire to do that, I’ll be after them." So after this troubling statements and bills, I decided to set the record straight. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit reproductive health care organization. It’s services provide STD testing, pregnancy prevention, contraception, counseling, cancer and HIV tests, and abortions. Planned Parenthood is a well rounded health care organization for men and women. They use their resources to help you not the other way around. Planned Parenthood is a program designed to help all human beings. Planned Parenthood shouldn’t be defunded; instead it should be keep being available to all human beings visiting or living in the
But I do not agree with this, life begins at conception. If Planned Parenthood were to be defunded by the government it would not mean that abortions would become illegal again, unless Roe v. Wade were reversed, abortion would still be legal. All that would happen is that Planned Parenthood would need to raise their own funds, like other organizations that do similar work have to do. Compass Care provides similar options to Planned Parenthood, but often leads to the baby being born and parenting instead of termination of the pregnancy.
There are many different reasons why political and religious groups want to defund Planned Parenthood. One major reason for so much opposition is because Planned Parenthood is America’s largest abortion provider. “One out of every four
Planned Parenthood provides much important health care to women in the United States. Therefore the Government (State and Federal) should continue to fund the organization. PPFA (Planned Parenthood Federation of America) provides a high variety of service at affordable pricing to women, men, and teenagers. Planned Parenthood has been categorized by some government representatives as an organization that misspend funds as well as some religious systems that oppose abortion. PPFA have also supply communities with guidance, health services, abortion services as well as referrals for adoption.
During the early 1900s, American nurse Margaret Sanger led the birth-control movement in the United States. She and others opened clinics to provide women with information and devices. Although frequently jailed, she and her followers were instrumental in getting laws changed. In subsequent years, laws against birth control gradually weakened, and more effective methods were developed.
In the 1960s, there was no federal law regulating abortions, and many states had banned the practice entirely, except when the life of the mother was endangered. Since 1973, the battle has raged. Pro-life groups began to lobby their Senators and Representatives to propose a Right-to-Life Amendment to the Constitution. Although introduced in Congress, the measure has never received the necessary support. Pro-choice groups such as the National ABORTION RIGHTS ACTION LEAGUE fear that a slow erosion of abortion rights has taken place since Roe v. Wade. Planned Parenthood clinics have become local battlegrounds over the abortion argument. Since Planned Parenthood is known for trying to provide safe, inexpensive abortions, protesters regularly picket outside their offices. Planned Parenthood sites have even been bombed by antiabortion followers. http://www.ushistory.org/us/57d.asp) The topic today continues to bring up much emotion as evident in our recent presidential
