Argument against English as primary language in United States I. Introduction: A. The greatness of the United States, as a country starts with its “First Amendment”, which gives freedom to the citizens and residents of this country. The most important of these are the freedom of speech and the freedom to exercise religion. Making one language as the primary languge goes against this freedom of speech. Also, “The Universal Declaration of Huma Rights”, as cited by the United Nations gives basic human rights, like language and religion to countries that are still in the dark ages. Immigration and English-only act A. This great nation of United States is made up of immigrants. But this proposal of making English as the primary language has been riding a huge anti-immigrant feelings and sentiments. It’s depriving the USA of lot of its values that the nation stands for. For example, in 1800’s and 1900’s such law prohibited the Native Americans from speaking their own language. Children from these families were separated from their house and admitted in English schools, so as to ensure the language dominance. B. The major reason people immigrate to the United Sates is because it’s a free country and it’s a land of opportunity. Having language enforcement contradicts this feeling of freedom and opportunity. III. English only acts and issues with the First Amendment, voting and education A. A lot of English only acts like the HR 123, HR 739 or the Language of Government act of 1995 states the US government will conduct official business in English only. A citation from the United States vs National Treasury Employees Union in 1995 stated “federal courts have held that laws which prevent the Government from communicating with citizens on issues of public importance, either by prohibiting citizens access to information or by prohibiting communication in a language other than English, violate the First Amendment.” So such laws hurt the basic foundation stones of this
